Lots of comments about the lack of extras on Blue is the Warmest Color...
My prediction is that Blue is the Warmest Color will be one of the "big money Criterion titles", sort of like Chasing Amy or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It is a popular (but not too popular) film right about now that will be a comparably hot seller with the general public. The lower price means that more people will investigate, and that's a good thing. I have also heard through the grapevine that the actresses and the director are on somewhat less-than-wonderful terms right now, so that might be a reason why we are not seeing bountiful extras at the moment. Do not hold me to that, though. Like Chasing Amy or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Blue is the Warmest Color will probably be featured prominently on the shelves at used Blu-ray/DVD stores over the following months and years, but that's alright, because more people will have at least given it a chance. |

I wasn't too excited about last month, but this month makes up for it.
Going for: Fantastic Mr. Fox Foreign Correspondent Jules and Jim Tess and maybe Blue Is The Warmest Color, depending on my level of self control ![]() |

I saw Blue Is the Warmest Color last week, and thought it, on balance, an excellent film and deeply immersive experience. The lead actresses truly live their roles and definitely deserved their inclusion as co-recipients for the Cannes Palme d'Or. (I also thought this film was much better than Kechiche's The Secret of the Grain, which I didn't care for.)
I knew Polanski's Tess would eventually be released. I've never seen it, but I consider Thomas Hardy's novel as one of the most powerful I've ever read. |

I don't think it will be featured like Benjamin Button, though. It will probably be treated like every other Criterion release (not expecting this one to pop up at Best Buy.) It most certainly deserves its placement in the collection, and it's not a flavor of the month. |

I'd like to see Blue is the Warmest Color at the theater soon, but am not sure if I'll get a convenient chance. (It's showing on the other side of the city now.) |

I finally saw my first non-animated Wes Anderson film last night ... that being Rushmore. If I had to describe the film in 1 word, it would be "quirky". If I could use 2 words, it would be "good" and "quirky". :-)

I'll squeeze this in between announcement comments...
I picked up City Lights from Barnes & Noble on my way home. I prefer the old setup, but this Dual Format thing is not half bad. It's a cool package. Quote:

Great to see some animation finally enter the DVD/Blu side of things. FM Fox is of course a great entry for the Wes fans, but is King of the Hill really the kind of material for the Criterion Collection. I suppose one could argue the dynamics of family, race and class division in rural Texas are worthy subjects, but the prominence of a fossil fuel industry will certainly raise a few eyebrows.

Gotta say, I am pleased with this February's announced titles. Lots of great releases. I'm especially excited for Truffaut's Jules and Jim. (So I guess I guessed correctly (sort of) when I'd stated that I could go for some more Truffaut, even though I wasn't expecting this wonderful announcement). I'm thrilled that we finally have an animated title in the collection with Fantastic Mr Fox. The features sound great. And Soderberg's highly under-rated King of the Hill makes it's debut in HD! Time to retire my import DVD.

A waste to who? They're clearly doing it because it will save them money. Breathless is likely one of their biggest sellers so rather than re-printing different packaging types for BD and DVD, they'll have one set with both. It sounds like the complete opposite of waste to me in fact.

My thoughts on the announcements:
Blue Is The Warmest Color - Good to see this, but I will wait for the special edition Breathless (Dual Format) - I already own the Blu-ray, so no thanks. Fantastic Mr. Fox - Will buy Foreign Correspondent - Will buy Jules And Jim - Will buy - The best announcement for me as I still have the Fox Lorber DVD instead of the Criterion. Also, please hurry up and release Two English Girls! King Of The Hill- Will buy Tess- Will buy |
