It's great. It's honestly like nothing that I've ever seen before. I have a rather large extended family so the film definitely feels extra personal to me.

Also, expect the ending to leave you wanting more. While I personally would have preferred it to be about 5-10 minutes longer, I felt satisfied overall.

Well I just finished watching Heaven's Gate on Criterion Blu-Ray:

I have always been a fan of this film. Maybe i'm a sucker for beautiful wide shots, epic battles, melodrama and messages; but I can't get enough of Heaven's Gate.

Sure, it's over-long, sometimes tedious. But it makes up for all of that with grand ambition and pure beauty. It is a truly under-appreciated film and I am so thankful for what Criterion did to it.

The Blu-Ray is a revelation. It looks and sounds great, it really is one of the best Blus on the market.

Anyways, those are my impressions of the Criterion Blu-Ray of Heaven's Gate and I highly recommend the purchase!

What a great month! Fantastic Mr. Fox looks fantastic. Tess, King of the Hill, Foreign Correspondent look great.

It's a bare-bones release, a more definite release is coming at a later date.

It's only special features are a tv spot and a trailer. They are planning to do a special edition later on.

I'm planning on buying both because I don't want to wait. I loved the movie and I'm willing to buy it twice instead of waiting forever for that to happen. I'm actually ecstatic because I was expecting to wait til August like I did for Amour.

In for everything except Fantastic Mr. Fox. Stellar month, even if it seems more "commercial" than other months. Glad to finally see Tess, and King of the Hill is a lost Soderbergh gem.. cool that is also includes The Underneath, which was an interesting failure.

I missed that part. Is criterion doing the special edition?

I thought Fantastic Mr. Fox was a pleasant surprise since we were all expecting The Life Aquatic.

I blind bought this last year partly on the strength of Cimino's much-loved The Deer Hunter and partly in curiosity over the whole "box office disaster" reputation it had. I've only seen it once so far but quite enjoyed it. No disaster here, in my opinion. The picture quality was great considering they had to use the separation masters since the original negative was only available for the theatrical content.

Yeah, I've never found the film to be a disaster. It's definitely messy in it's theatrical version but in the director's cut? Not at all, a great film IMO.

Finally got around to watching Fanny and Alexander. Just the movie version. Still need to watch the TV version. What a great movie though. Just a joy to watch with the ups and downs of this family. Couldn't help but think about how Jarl Kulle's performance as Gustav Adolf Ekdahl with what I thought was some over the top acting would have fit so well in the silent era of movies. It's a complement by me. This guy had great physical acting ability. He managed to play a pretty sleazy type character in such a charming way.

I have a few questions about ordering from Criterions website.

If I pre-order a film, will I get the lowest price? Will I be charged right away? Are there shipping costs?

I believe its only free shipping if its over $50 but shipping costs aren't that much and your card doesn't get charged until your order ships out. You can usually pre-order for cheaper off Amazon or Import Cds but Criterion has a loyalty program where they build up points for every dollar you spend on their site and when you get 500 points you get a $50 Criterion gift card.

Amazon is the place to go, especially around the holidays. If they get the pre-order up before Christmas, you might get a really nice price if it's included in a sale.

First time seeing Babette's Feast? I watched it back in May or June and was shocked by how much I enjoyed it. I'm eager to revisit it in HD when I move back home.

Yes, it was the first time . I may see it again come Thanksgiving or Christmas. It is the perfect holiday movie.

(I owned the DVD, but since the quality was so terrible, I never saw more than the first five minutes. The BluRay, on the other hand, is a revelation!)

I think at this point Criterion is just f*cking with fans of Life Aquatic. Each and every month, it seems to be the most requested title and when the announcements are made, there's always a good half-dozen people asking for it. Instead, they announce Fantastic Mr. Fox which already has a pretty decent blu-ray release.
