Fans of the Criterion title, Wings of Desire, might be pleased to know that Bruno Ganz plays a small part in Ridley Scott's new movie, The Counselor, as a diamond dealer. He's quite eerily meticulous in this role, and this is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. I kept thinking that he looked familiar, and it took me forever to realize that he was in the Wim Wenders film.

Thanks! She is like a fine wine...and I prefer her most as a brunette, esp. in this forthcoming movie.

I love the preview for the film in question. Think Kiss Me Deadly combined with Solaris.
Wow, well, first thing I thought was Species meets The Man Who Fell to Earth!

Yeah, the old avatar is already gone. Funny, I SAW Lost In Translation when it came out, and I don't remember her looking that hot. I really liked the film too, not sure how it is for replay value, but your old still makes it look more visually stylish than I remember. BTW, I found it to be one of only 2 American films I'd seen that captured what it feels & looks like being in Japan. Stangely the other was "You Only Live Twice".
Um, I saw a trailer here for the film in your new avatar, but can't remember the name, I know it was something kind of surreal I really want to see when it comes out on blu, as a Japanese theatrical release of a film like this outside Tokyo just doesn't happen. Arg, what was it?

Any B&N online coupon codes active? I want to order 3 films by Roberto.... but need to know before ordering. Also, when does the sale end?

Thanks,
Tom

If you want to see the old avatar again, here it is:

I guess I'm good at making certain films/actresses look more stylish than you think. I got those visual skillz

The new movie is called Under the Skin. I'll be curious to see this one. Looks a lot like a David Lynch film but Jonathan Glazer directed it.

*Note to self: Must discover the pretentious nature of the Criterion elitism; can't possibly be the little C on the cover?

I'm sure if you hit yourself in the head with a hammer a few times it will help bring you down to their level of intelligence.

Might also be something in the water they're drinking...especially down in Texas. I think a bit too much gas and oil got mixed into their drinking water. It causes irreparable brain damage resulting in actual troll-people.

I found a part time job at a used media store by my house and on my first day I noticed a beautiful wong kar-wai collection on dvd. I've never watched his films but they seem right up my alley. Is everything in this set available on blu ray/criterion? If not I'll probably pick it up. Ah hell chungking express alone is like 70 bucks on blu ray. Maybe I will get this set.

In The Mood for Love is the only one of his films on Blu Ray from Criterion. (Well, Chungking Express was available, but is now out of print)

ATTENTION: To anyone who owns the Walkabout blu, I suggest you check your disc for skipping/freezing starting at the 49:57 or around that mark. After two years of the Bluray playing perfectly fine for myself, I checked again yesterday (after reports from the criterionforum suggested issues) and sure enough, it froze and skipped for several minutes, rendering the film unwatchable.

I checked my disc on a PS3 and my Dynex player, both showed the same issues. Going to have to e-mail Mulvaney about this. Just thought I'd warn everyone!

p.s. tomorrow is Criterion Q+A at the Wexler Center where they will be answering questions about upcoming releases and what not. If yr in the Columbus area, tickets are real cheap. Should be an interesting day.

Thank you for the info. I decided to order the U.K. blu ray of chungking before I buy anything else as it is much cheaper than criterion or the dvd set with most likely a horrible pq.

Haven't watched WALKABOUT recently (need to do that again soon) but I recall the original pressing had issues on some players, and it worked fine on one player I had but not on an older one.

edit - on second thought most captures I've seen from the new transfer look like an oil painting. I don't know why I'm even debating this.
It's the one Criterion blu I will never own. Until their next screw up.

(Unless it happens to get a redo.)

How about Children of Paradise? That one looks MUCH worse.
To the person who originally asked though, if it helps film restorer Robert A. Harris did say that only the hunting scene looked that bad and most of the transfer is at least passable if that means anything.

Shame, it's an incredible film (and packaging looks fantastic) but on the notorious reviews it's received, I don't think its worth it.

On a related note, I'm strongly considering Lola Montes blu before the end of the sale… anyone have thoughts on the disc? I have the R4 dvd (which I haven't seen in full, quality looks average) which I'll keep anyway because of some awesome features (Adrian Martin commentary) but the Criterion (and dat cover art!) looks like a great release...
