Of course, von Trier is an extremely polarizing director, as is the film. I would much rather have a film from some of the other major foreign polarizing directors, such as Bela Tarr or Tarkovsky.

I honestly can't imagine who would want to own Antichrist, but I'm sure there are people that do (just like with Salo and Caligula).

So...anyone excited about its release? Or, do people side with my opinion?
I think it's just shock value stuff that I am not interested in, and this is coming from a person who watches Paul Morrissey films that have drag queens, junkies, hustlers, etc. but are, let me quote an article, "powerful, shrill, unassimilable personalities starving for self-expression".

This just looks like an Eli Roth movie with a message. Boring.

You pretty much nailed it on the head except the movie is so obsessed with trying to be shocking that it forgot to have anything resembling a coherent message. Without spoiling the (paper thin) plot its like a re-telling of the Biblical Adam and Eve story filtered through a drug addled mind. I'm not claiming Von Treir is a user but in the sense that if you're around someone who is high, they think they're being profound when to everyone sober they're mumbling non-sense. Was so disappointed to see it on so many "best of" year lists. It was nothing but arthouse Saw for hipsters.

On another note I'm really hoping "Still Walking" turns out to be a criterion Blu-ray from IFC...

I haven't seen Antichrist, even though I own the UK release on blu.
But I'm going to pick up Criterion's release of it as well.

Back a few months ago there was a discussion about "shocking" films, or disgusting films that some people were wondering why anyone would want to own like Salo, or Antichrist, Sweet Movie, etc. I don't recall anyone mentioning Bad Boy Bubby that was released by Eureka. I own it, but haven't seen it. It sounds just as disturbing or shocking as the others mentioned. Has anyone here watched it? How is it?

I'm very curious about Videodrome even though I've never seen it! What should I expect? Horror?

I've heard the title Bad Boy Bubby but didn't realize it was something shocking, I guess I'll need to look it up... On the subject of disturbing content in movies. Salo has a point and is illustrating the destruction of the body by those in a position of absolute power. It's not for everyone but at least Salo has redeeming qualities.

Its somewhere between horror and sci-fi. You should look up the trailer, it would probably give you a better idea of what to expect. If you're still interested your next step would be to search out Shinya Tsukamoto's "Tetsuo"

Gee, I wonder... BTW, have you counted how many posts you've made yourself today? Nice to know you have a fan club, but trawling through all this backslapping and frivolity is getting to be hard work!

Getting back to Criterion... piecing together the shredded bits of info on the new releases, is it still the case that we don't have firm release dates for Seven Samurai, Thin Red Line, Charade, etc.?

I'm a big Von Trier fan and completist, but I have no desire to see Antichrist.

I'd much prefer Europa (aka Zentropa). With all its visual stylization it'd benefit a lot from a high-definition transfer.

Other titles would be more problematic. Breaking the Waves was shot on film, then transferred to video, then transferred back to film again. I don't know if Von Trier would agree to go back to the original elements.

Dancer in the Dark was shot in a mixture of film (real-world sequences) and SD video (musical sequences). But it'd be worth it if only for the audio upgrade.

Dogville was shot in HD.

I presume Manderlay as well?

I already own Antichrist and I do not feel ashamed of doing so
All I can say is that me and my gf were very... I don't know what word to use but we liked it, yes it's graphic but they're only special effects. I can certainly see why it's such a polarizing movie, I'd never recommend this movie to anyone else that's for sure.

Yep. I didn't mention it because I didn't find it nearly as interesting (despite the very lovely Bryce Dallas Howard).

I'm amazed by the Walkabout cover, as I haven't seen it before I was wondering if someone who has could tell me if there is a scene in the movie that matches the cover?

Excited by the news of Videodrome coming to BD! I'm hoping that they use the suitcase material as the cover for Darjeeling, that would be awesome! Looking forward to seeing what foreign films will be announced through the end of the year since these leaks are pointing towards a more domestic-focused release schedule.
