This is being released on Blu-ray in France, early next year:
![]() The Criterion DVD is still sold, so there may be an upgrade. If this is a new scan and/or restoration, hopefully it will fare better than Madame de ... . Le Plaisir is a Carlotta release. Those two are truly "important" films and both are very good examples of story telling through film. They should be seen, even if they can only be seen on DVD. I've considered getting Madame de ... ., thinking I could overlook some of its video flaws by considering them painterly re-imaginings for a new generation, but Gaumont may one day supply a new master and/or encode. I don't know which Criterion had access to. I suppose I'll get Lola Montes before the B&N sale ends. |

I'm on a roll. Just finished watching Repo Man. My one word description would be BEE-ZARRE! Two words would be fun and bizarre. So much happens in this movie that I know I missed a lot. I'm already looking forward to the next viewing. (Watching the supplements now ... I love Harry Dean Stanton!

Hopefully we will see some Jacques Demy's film in the library soon? The Umbrellas of Cherbourg perhaps?

Yeah that one seems like a strong possibility. The lesser Girls of Rochefort would be nice too. I'll be importing the Cherbourg UK blu-ray in February though since I'm impatient.

![]() (Assuming we're disqualifying Gimme Shelter and Quadrophenia-- And at this point, I've almost given up hope of seeing Bergman's "Magic Flute" upgraded--Maybe the original Swedish version was a TV source. ![]() |

If you want to go back to the laserdisc days, when it was easier to license the major studio titles, they also did Swing Time, Singin' in the Rain, The Producers, Show Boat, The Wizard of Oz, West Side Story, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and Evita. And depending on how you want to define "musical", there's also A Hard Day's Night, Help, This Is Spinal Tap, and The Harder They Come. |

I am at the theater about to see Blue is the Warmest Color. I decided to beat Criterion to the punch and catch this one on the big screen in midtown Atlanta.
Earlier today, I watched Murnau's Sunrise for the first time. What a great movie! Given its reputation, I was expecting this film to be "homeworky", so I was surprised at how entertained I was throughout the whole story. I guess that the moral of Sunrise, in a nutshell, is not to go out for a cheeseburger when you can get a filet mignon at home. In visual terms, I'm amazed at how these scenes were created back in the day. Last edited by The Great Owl; 11-23-2013 at 10:38 PM. |

Absolutely! I do feel though that The 400 Blows is the epitome of those qualities, such a marvelous film.

While it's not really a musical, there's Topsy-Turvy which is about a musical and has a few musical numbers.

Watched Band of Outsiders and Breathless. Preferred BoO over breathless. i can see why people like Breathless, its has character build-up, interesting dialogue and style but felt like it was dragging in certain parts throughout the film. BoO had some style but to me, flowed better than Breathless.

Same here, except I know the wife picked it up for me. (Well, she pre-ordered during the 50% sale anyway since we don't have a local B&N). Can't wait to get my hands on it.
