Yeah, I feel the same. I really want to finish the film, just need to be in the right frame of mind to see it I believe. I have a couple of Criterions that were blind buys that I may try to trade over in the forum later.

Well my local B&N has a Zatoichi set with my name on it! I will be picking it up on Black Friday with the 30% coupon plus the 50% Criterion sale plus my membership discount. Now that is a deal!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have only seen the first Zatoichi film and I absolutely loved it, so I can't wait to gradually dig though the set in the coming months. ![]() |

It's a title that's been sitting in my cart at Amazon ever since. The only reason I'm dragging my heels about getting it is because the review here at blu-ray.com gives really poor marks to the PQ/AQ. Given its low budget origins, it might just be one of those films that's never going to look great. I keep hoping I'll find a copy in Wal-Mart's bargain bins for $7.88. Even more interesting is that I watched it back-to-back on Netflix with Neil Jordan's Ondine. The two movies are quasi-thematically alike in that each introduces a fantastic element, and you spend the entire film wondering if that fantastic element is real or fake. It's the best film version of H.G. Wells's The Island of Dr. Moreau (the 1977 film is "OK", and the 1996 version is dreadful), though it's been said that Wells himself didn't like it, thinking that it played too much like a horror film instead of the thought-provoking science fiction that his novel was intended to be. He's not completely wrong on that point, but I still love the film.

Great movie! If you're a fan of the classic Universal horror movies this is a very safe blind buy. Nice supplements to boot.

I love Island of Lost Souls dearly, and I agree that it's the best film version of the H.G. Wells story, The Island of Dr. Moreau, although I admittedly have a soft spot for the 1977 adaptation starring Burt Lancaster in the title role and the beautiful Barbara Carrera (Never Say Never Again) as one of the unfortunate people on the island.

And as for watching Stagecoach earier, I really enjoyed it. Amazing to see such a beautiful movie, and such a young John Wayne. It was a great film, and still one of the few westerns I've seen, but I'm working on that. Liberty Valance still holds the top spot for me when it comes to older westerns, but Unforgiven is the top of tops. Took a break from my Criterion discs and put in the recent Thirteen Days release. It looks amazing! I love this movie, so it's nice to see that it was given a nice treatment. Now on to Monty Python: The Meaning of Life. I'll resume Criterion viewing later with City Lights I believe. Last edited by lordmorpheus72; 11-27-2013 at 08:41 PM. |

And while on the subject of Westerns, at the same time I first watched Liberty Valance, I saw Fort Apache, which I loved as well. Both movies changed my mind about westerns.. not that I ever hated them, I was just never "into them." I acutally have The Searchers at home right now from Netflix... and I'm very excited about finally seeing this film. I've heard so much about it, and been spoiled (but it is almost 50 years old so I can't be mad), that I hope my expectations are not too high. |

I was watching one of the bonus features on 12 Angry Men this morning and decided then to add My Darling Clementine to my queue. The original True Grit is there too, and Yellow Ribbon

I've gone through two copies of 'Tokyo Story' and both had scratches on the DVD Disc 1 of the film. I watched the film on the disc that was scratched and no hiccups. So instead of exchanging it for another copy for the third time, I am probably just going to keep my copy since it plays well. I also have the first edition of 'Tokyo Story' on DVD so there is no real reason why I should be complaining, but just the notion of one of my highly anticipated title releases has a scratch on the disc is annoying enough to overlook. Oh well beggers can't be choosers. I just don't want to get disappointed a third time if I decide to exchange it for another copy. I don't know if it's just disc placement that caused those scratches, but who knows.
