Okay, I'm wanting to take advantage of the B&N sale this weekend before it ends. I do not own any Criterion films yet and have no idea where to start. I love all sorts of genres so I'm open to anything.

What can you all recommend for starting off my Criterion collection?

Can you give us something to start with? Genres you're interested in? Or directors? Or years? or particular countries films you enjoy?

My first was two Hitchcock films that I already knew and loved (39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes) and The Night of the Hunter, which I bought blind and LOVE.

My top 5 Criterions (in terms of overall value):

1. On The Waterfront
2. Paris, Texas
3. The Killing
4. Seven Samurai
5. The Thin Red Line

All of those Criterions above I consider essential buys!

"The Big City" is a very good story about an extended family. I was disappointed by "Charulata," but that may have been because I saw it shortly after seeing "The Music Room." I'll have to see it again, some other day. But I've decided to buy a copy of "The Big City."

I waited until today to watch The Ice Storm for the very first time. Talk about a movie where everyone lacks basic morals! Still, it was a good movie to watch and even though she was just slightly underage, Christina Ricci is still so cute! (Well, I think she was 17 when the movie was made)

Night of the Hunter should be on any Criterion list when discussing value. The documentary is as extensive as it gets.

Pretty much every genre to be honest. Two films that caught my eye when I looked were Hunger and The Devil's Backbone. I'm very interested to see Steve McQueen's other films after watching 12 Years a Slave. And I really enjoy Del Toro films.

I'll look into the ones you listed, thanks!

Okay, I'll check it out. Thanks!

Hopefully I don't overdo it for my first Criterion haul.

I haven't seen Hunger, but Devil's Backbone is fantastic.

The great thing about Criterion is once you get rolling, you will be trying all kinds of films you mightn't otherwise.

Blow Out, Yojimbo, Fanny & Alexander, Sweet Smell of Success, Stagecoach, Diabolique, The Red Shoes, The Life and Death of Col. Blimp and The 400 Blows are some of my other favourites (but there';s really too many to list)

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well, Pro-B! Thanks for all of your work on the great reviews and recommendations here.

I usually lie low and stay away from shopping and crowds over Thanksgiving and over the weekend, but I've got a great stack of recent purchases to keep me on cloud nine.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone else reading this as well!

Yeah I have a feeling I'm going to become addicted to them! One of the reasons I've held off for so long. But I can't wait to finally get into everything. So many to get!

Has anyone had any issues with their Slacker disc? Mine won't load past the Criterion logo in the top left corner.

I really didn't get my first CC title until, probably 3 months ago?

I'm up to about 30 individual titles and 3 sets (2 Eclipse, and the Samurai Trilogy).

B&N sales, CC Flash Sales, Amazon Lightning Deals and other things have really been great over the last few months. Hopefully I'll score another 5-6 over the Christmas holiday and get any missing titles that I'm drooling over after the new year.

I'll probably dive in once more for the sale, even though my first order hasn't come through (and being in Aus, unlikely to before the sale ends). I've never seen a Satayjit Ray film before, what's the best of the 3 blus that would be the best blind-buy to start? I'm thinking The Music Room, but Charulata and Big City look good...

John Cassavetes Five Films box set is by far my favorite release of all time and the only media I feel I couldn't live without, I've gifted the DVD set so many times and this Christmas I've already bought three blu-ray sets for gifts and a few copies of Faces/A Woman Under the Influence/Killing of a Chinese Bookie on DVD for people who don't have blu-ray players.

I've never seen any Cassavetes, and that enthusiastic post has me keen to check it out!

It's a fantastic film and perfect for watching this time of year (Thanksgiving and all). Last night or so might have been optimal to watching since there was a major ice storm not far from me (we received mixed precip with rain and snow) and ironically it was the night before Thanksgiving eve.

We got it too, but it wasn't even remotely close to the prediction. They called for 5-7", we got maybe 1" over the course of 5 hours or so. It's interesting though to see the movie full of so many popular actors of today getting their start in 1 movie (or at least having major roles early in their careers in an adult style movie).

Hmm looks like Island of Lost Souls is no longer showing as scheduled for a Lightning Deal tomorrow. (Or today actually, time flies by so quickly!)
