I really recommend getting the Zatoichi box set before the Criterion B&N sales ends. The lable did an amazing job putting this release together and I could NOT be any happier with the finished product.

i guess its more difficult for modern viewers the appreciate some of the filmmaking techniques employed by truffaut, because they have become assimilated into our film language. i think this same phenomena occurs when people see another new wave classic, namely breathless: "yea, it was cool, but i just don't understand the hype."

beyond technique, i always thought that the story was great as well. two bohemian friends, more interested in art and personal expression than industry and wages, fall for and share the same girl. this sounds like something straight out of the summer of love. truffaut not only anticipated this burgeoning sentiment, but also chose a story set in the pre-WW1 era (such a lifestyle was relatively unheard of in those times). sure, catherine was a *****, but all of the characters' refusal to adhere to social norms and their intellectual and emotional honesty towards one another was revelatory to me.

i could go on and on about the merits of this film (i think it is the pinnacle of the new wave, much better than anything godard ever touched [yes, i said it!]), but, alas, i have to get some shit done around the house. family is coming into town for thanksgiving.
Well said buddy - could not agree with you more. I love how Truffaut used the jump cuts in a totally different sort of story from what had come before. I think Jules et Jim is a masterpiece and can't wait for it in hi-def.

Fantastic movie. Different from other "prison" films in that
[Show spoiler]there isn't really an antagonist. Most films there is a strict warden, a psycho guard, another inmate, something. This film has none of that, it really puts the entire focus on Fontaine and Fontaine alone.

I think it's safe to assume digipacks for everything with 3+ discs, but the 2 disc dual-format releases (City Lights and Frances Ha) are still in plastic cases.

I'm glad that most of the January releases are 2 disc, not so happy about most of Feb. being 3 disc. I'm always a little nervous ordering the digipacks, even though I've run in to little trouble so far.

How do we think It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World will come out?

I've never been a fan of Digipacks, my OCD also hates that every CC release I have except 1 is in the same case. The outcast, Breathless, it just sits there on the shelf... mocking me with it's ackwardness and size difference.

Plus the cases get damaged too easily and the corners are almost always damaged in transit. Since I can't pickup releases locally, every CC I have except 1 is an internet buy.

If Barnes 'N Noble damages all of your films, then maybe you should start using Amazon. They pack everything very securely.

B&N, Amazon, eBay, GoHastings, ImportCD's and Deep Discount have all sent me Digipacks that are damaged. (Usually TV shows) Amazon is the most reliable however when you order multiple items they have this tendency to wrap them tightly in plastic with a cardboard backer. The plastic is often so tight on them that it will bend the corners if the Digipack isn't in a spot other than the top item.

Basically it's a crap shoot anywhere else but in person.
