A question for any owners of Summer Interlude (Sommarlek):

I borrowed the dvd from the library, and the image is seriously window-boxed. I read in one review that the blu-ray is also, but it was just a reprint of the notes in the booklet. I really liked the movie, but I was disappointed by window-boxing on the dvd. I bought the blu-ray at Barnes last week, but I don't know if want to keep it if it's framed the same as the dvd.

Is the blu-ray window-boxed?

Can you not just wait two weeks for the 40% off all DVD/BDs? Not exactly the same savings but it's still a good way from list price...

Thanks, I already checked Beaver's caps, but I wanted another eyewitness account. First of all, the liner notes say it's window-boxed, and secondly, Beaver's caps are not always known to be 100% reliable.

"on the waterfront" is the greatest film they've remastered (and one of the best films ever made) and it's not even on your list.

have you not seen it?

First, just to set the tone, The Three Colors Trilogy is my favorite film release perhaps ever. Every time I revisit the films (especially Blue and Red) I love them more and more, other favorites in the collection for me are The Dardennes films (especially Kid with a Bike, less so Rosetta).

Here is what I have in order of my favorite Criterions:

- Three Colors
- Double life of Veronique
- The Kid with a Bike
- La Promesse
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
- Le Cercle Rouge
- 12 Angry Men
- Seven Samurai
- Dazed and Confused
- Army of Shadows
- On the Waterfront
- Breathless
- Repo Man
- Brazil (yuck)

Well everyone, I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving! I didn't eat too much because I had to go hunt for some Blu-Ray deals later that night!

Picked up for $3.99:
Event Horizon (underrated film, amazing atmosphere)
Where The Wild Things Are (another overlooked film)

I also picked up the Home Alone 2-pack as well for 10 bucks. I thought I had a good haul but Black Friday was even better!

The Zatoichi set for 75 bucks with tax. It's such a deal! Plus, given that it's a blind buy; I had to take a chance.

Well I did watch the first two films last night: (The Tale of Zatoichi and The Tale of Zatoichi Continues)

Let me just say they are amazing samurai epics, I mean up there in the same league as some of Kurosawa's best works. They are exciting, serious in tone (I've heard they get more crazy as they go along, fine by me ) and beautifully composed. The transfers Criterion did to these films are masterful, making the wonderful cinematography stand out even more.

I just had to take some time away from the madness of Thanksgiving weekend to tell you how awesome the Zatoichi set is. And if you enjoy samurai films, this is frankly a must own.

I will probably post my impressions after watching another two films and I look forward to having conversations about this set in the future.

Have a great weekend!

SilentDawn.

Picked up the John Cassavetes box set yesterday for $40 at BN using the 50% off sale, 30% coupon, and 10% member savings. Such a great deal!

Looking to get Anatmony of a Murder from Amazon in a few minutes if the price is cheap, then Island of Lost Souls and I'm done.. broke.. etc.

edit: Holy Crap that went fast! 87% claimed before it even refreshed. That was close.

As of a few weeks ago there was a sale in the system running the 17th through to Christmas on all DVDs and BDs in store.

Have a look again, it's in my list that I own.

I was very underwhelmed by it though personally. Contemplating selling it but may watch it again first.

Were they $17.99 like the other Lightning Buys? I've snagged a few of them at that price.

just checking in here, folks...

Pale Flower came up as a film to potentially check out... You can count my vote as a yes on that one. I really enjoyed it!

I'm planning to pull the trigger on 3 - 5 Criterion titles and I'm patiently waiting for Amazon to mark them down to $17.99. We'll see. In the meantime, I scored The Apartment (upgrade for me from DVD), The Grapes of Wrath (semi-blind because it has been ages and I was too young to appreciate it), Laura (blind), and The Best Years of Our Lives (blind). All of these for $40.50.

The first 3 titles I got at deepdiscountdvd.com. They aren't Criterions, but nevertheless, I figure that they are essential discs to own. That site has the best prices on those three films right now and they offer free shipping on orders over $25.
