Yeah.. not too bad a price. I grabbed this one, not sure if I can really afford Island of Lost Souls... still need to buy presents for others. ha!

That's why I'm normally finished with Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving!

Yes... but now I hear of that 40% off sale so maybe I'll pick it up for a bit more money... I can't wait to buy Nashville too.

Excellent haul. The Apartment, Laura, and The Best Years of Our Lives are all top-notch works of cinema. Laura, in particular, is one of the best-looking black-and-white Blu-ray transfers around. The Grapes of Wrath is in my stack, but I'm waiting until I've finished reading the Steinbeck novel.

I just pulled the trigger on the StudioCanal Blu-ray of The Third Man. Cue an even mixture of happiness that I'll have this in my stack during December, which I have designated as "film noir month", and resignation that I have not been able to upgrade my Criterion DVD of the film.

$10 for the StudioCanal edition is easier to swallow than $200 for the out-of-print Criterion Blu-ray. My obsessive compulsive nature does not have many boundaries, but this is one of them.

Picked up Shallow Grave and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Need some comedy's in the collection. Could've picked up Amacord but decided to leave it for later.

edit: Holy Crap that went fast! 87% claimed before it even refreshed. That was close.
Holy hell that John cassavetes set idea with the Black Friday sale is tempting!

Yeah, I couldn't pass it up. The lady at my local BN lets me use the coupons, and didn't disappoint with the 30% Black Friday, and 10% member usage. And at $40, it's less than $10 a movie, and you get the Cassavetes doc.

I'm starting my "film noir marathon" this weekend, consisting of the following Blu-rays that I've purchased over the past couple of months...

[Show spoiler]Film Noir Collection (Union Station / Appointment with Danger / Dark City / Rope of Sand)
The Big Combo
A Double Life
Plunder Road
Private Hell 36
Crashout
Force of Evil
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye
Cry Vengeance
The Postman Always Rings Twice
(1946)
Panic in the Streets
Scarlet Street
The Stranger
The Hitch-Hiker
They Made Me a Fugitive
City That Never Sleeps
Shack Out on 101
The File on Thelma Jordan
Hoodlum Empire
Cloak and Dagger
Secret Beyond the Door
Hell's Half Acre
Ruthless
Body and Soul
Champion
The Dark Mirror
Suddenly

December will be a great time to enjoy these movies, and I am predicting that the above discs will make fine editions to the film noir (or film noir-esque) titles that I've already viewed on Blu-ray.

[Show spoiler]The Maltese Falcon
The Enforcer
(my favorite cover art of any Blu-ray in my collection)
The Night of the Hunter
The Killing/Killer's Kiss
Ministry of Fear
On the Waterfront
Laura
Sunset Boulevard
White Heat
Kiss Me Deadly
Rebecca
Strangers on a Train
Shadow of a Doubt
Notorious
Spellbound
Niagara
The Big Heat
Sweet Smell of Success
Two Men in Manhattan
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
(The 1956 version follows many noir conventions.)

...in addition to several impressive neo noir flicks, such as Chinatown, To Live and Die in L.A., Heat, and No Country for Old Men.

I've been told that Pale Flower is a good Criterion title for people like me who are interested in film noir, so I may be picking that one up at some point in the not-too-distant future.

It goes without saying that I cannot wait for Rififi and Thief to come out on Criterion Blu-ray in January, nor can I wait for The Big Sleep.
I'm glad I held off on upgrading Casablanca being that they are releasing the Bogart 4 film box set in March. I might have to wait until later in the year to get a great deal on it... I think I can hold off. I have the DVD of The Maltese Falcon and saw it twice MANY years ago. I wasn't going to upgrade, but this set makes sense for me - especially with the other 2 films that I have not seen yet but am excited to. No idea how much the MSRP will be, but I can imagine getting it for around $25 some time next year. Will be a good score!

What 4 film set? I must've missed that one.

picked up the zatoichi set today. what a great packaging job. probably the best looking release that criterion has put out.

for those of you who have already picked up your set, what did you end up doing with the big sticker on the front? i was thinking about putting it on my fridge or maybe the side of my blu-ray shelf..?

I couldn't pass it up either-- and I've only seen Woman under Influence previously. But I'd gladly pay $20 for it by itself, so I view the others as a $5/each risk. Given the synopses I've found and that they're well reviewed, I figure I'll enjoy at least 2 of the others. Maybe more!

It's very puzzling that in Criterion's photos of the set, the Zatoichi sticker is right on the cardboard outer sleeve. If they thought it should be there, why not just do that at the factory?
