I wouldn't mind double dipping if Criterion were to release Caché anytime soon. It's the only Haneke film I've seen but I do love it dearly.

i think the reviewer on amazon is confused. i saw a print of the film about 10 years ago in a college film class, and i have the old paramount dvd. i did not notice any alterations when i watched the blu-ray a few nights ago. also, the runtime between the dvd and blu is identical (check dvdbeaver).

barbara jean does indeed have a 'nervous breakdown' scene, but it is not at the end of the film; it is during her first appearance back onstage after being hospitalized. SPOILERS!! given that she gets shot at the end of the film, it does not make sense for her to have another onstage breakdown during that sequence. END SPOILERS

so yea, i'm pretty sure that the reviewer was just getting some of the sequencing of the film mixed up in their head...

It's also $11.83 (or $10.67 after promo code HOLIDAY10) at DVDplanet.com. Mine is already on the way.

Yesterday, I went through Champion, Hoodlum Empire, and Hell's Half Acre. They're all solid good Blu-rays!
Hope you'll post your thoughts about it after you've seen it.

I checked out that review on Amazon. He claims that the scene where Barbara Jean (Ronee Blakley) has her breakdown is missing. He must have a faulty disc because it's there! It even has its own chapter stop (Chapter 19 "Opry Belle"). These are blu-ray / DVD combo packs so you'd think he'd check the other disc in the set before posting that pointless review, then again I find Amazon user reviews at times to be chock full of the most ill-informed, moronic comments imaginable.

I don't have to choose which. I have the Artisan "Prizefighter DVD Collector's Pack" that includes both.

That aside, I agree with you that Body and Soul is the better film.

It's like the people who insist that Back to the Future had the "To Be Continued" card at the end in its original theatrical release.

(Er, ISTR it did, but only as a joke?
It's the ones who historical-revisionistically think it wasn't a joke who're the ones that bug you. Same here.)

I watched Army of Shadows last night an I came out pretty floored. I think Melville may have even bested Le samourai with this one. Does anyone else feel like this film helped lathe groundwork for the most recent adaption of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy? I definitely got a similar feeling from both films.

Great film, at first I thought it looked like it would be pretty average but it slowly draws you in and builds an almost unbearable tension. It has a feeling of authenticity that comes from Melville and Kessel's time in the Resistance. I suspect it was a major influence on the hit BBC series Secret Army.

I'm new to Criterion titles. Are all Criterion releases essentially immaculate, or are there some out there with bad transfers or poor audio?

I still need to rip/watch my copies of Frances Ha and Naked Lunch, but The Thin Red Line seems to be completely flawless.

No, it was not in the original release. It was added to the film when it came out on video. Zemeckis and Gale had planned the film as a one-shot, and it wasn't until it was out and became a hit that there was any thought of doing the sequels.

It's like Lucas adding "A New Hope" to the scrawl on Star Wars only after production began on The Empire Strikes Back.
