I'll play. I'm trying for variety, and part of that variety will be listing only one film per director.

In alphabetical order:

Beauty and the Beast (Cocteau)
Black Narcissus (Powell)
Branded to Kill (Suzuki)
Diabolique (Clouzot)
The Double Life of Veronique (Kieślowski)
The Gold Rush (Chaplin)
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion (Petri)
Ivan's Childhood (Tarkovsky)
The Killing -or- Paths of Glory (Kubrick) *
M (Lang)
Nashville (Altman)
The Night of the Hunter (Laughton)
The Rules of the Game (Renoir)
Sansho the Bailiff (Mizoguchi)
Seven Samurai (Kurosawa) **
Smiles of a Summer Night (Bergman) ***
The 39 Steps (Hitchcock)
12 Angry Men (Lumet)
Tokyo Story (Ozu)
Wings of Desire (Wenders)

* I'm really having a hard time deciding between the two.

** Really, any Kurosawa would do.

*** Ditto Bergman.

Everyone has their own favorites but these are good entry points. They're very accessible (not to mention great films) and you can branch out more if you like 'em:

Wages of Fear
Breathless (Criterion recommends this as a starting point)
The Red Shoes
Seven Samurai
400 Blows
In the Mood for Love
High and Low
Kuroneko
The Killing
Kiss Me Deadly

Off the top of my head, here's my Top 20 currently-in-print Criterion Blu-rays...

Paris, Texas
The Night of the Hunter
On the Waterfront
Stagecoach
Sweet Smell of Success
The Wages of Fear
The 39 Steps
The Thin Red Line
Kiss Me Deadly
The Killing
12 Angry Men
Seven Samurai
M
Letter Never Sent
Solaris
Diabolique
La Notte
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
Fanny and Alexander
Seconds

Narrowing my favorite currently-in-print Criterion Blu-rays down to a Top 20 was a lot more difficult than I figured it would be.

With an honorable mention for four favorite Criterion Blu-rays that are currently out-of-print, but still somewhat available through third-party sellers...

Army of Shadows
Le Cercle Rouge
Léon Morin, Priest
Last Year at Marienbad

Army of Shadows is actually my absolute favorite Criterion Blu-ray in my collection.

Belle de jour is an essential.

We really need more Bunuel on blu-ray, too.

I don't know if it makes it better or worse for you that she WANTS him to treat her that way and considers him unmanly when he doesn't take charge of her. In that sense it's actually a strong woman role .

God, this list could have easily been 90 or 100 titles long and it still would be missing some essential releases, but here you go:

Seven Samurai
Yojimbo/Sanjuro set
Rashomon
High and Low
Three Colors Trilogy
The Double Life of Veronique
Blow Out
Kiss Me Deadly
House
Godzilla
Zatoichi
Three Outlaw Samurai
Branded to Kill
Tokyo Drifter
The Samurai Trilogy
In the Mood for Love
Repo Man
The Seventh Seal
The Killing
Paths of Glory

I should've jumped on NASHVILLE @ $22.99. I thought it was going to be that way for a few days so I held off... Bummertown!

Best Buy is having a Criterion sale. Nashville is listed at $22.99 and is currently out of stock. If it comes back in stock Amazon might match it or you can just grab it there.
