I ordered "Nashville" & "Paris, Texas" for the B1G1 Sale...

Trivia: "Shoot the Piano Player" is one Bob Dylan's favorite films... If not his very favorite.

I think it's pretty great too.

YES! I have that on my wish list, too. I'm sure that you'll get around to seeing it before I do. I'd be interested to hear what you think of it. Also, at the $39.95 MSRP, it has (I think) 3 or 4 films. Can't beat that! 1 film other than L'Atalante is supposed to be pretty worthwhile.

I haven't seen Seven Days In May, but speaking of the other two - there is nothing about them that requires "more viewer seasoning." That's silly. The Manchurian Candidate is an all time great film. Seconds is a fine film, but (for me, at least) I'd rank it at or near the bottom of all the Criterion titles I've seen.

I agree about The Manchurian Candidate. For me, it was one of the "gateway" movies that got me interested in 1960s cinema and, as such, I consider it completely accessible.

I've always loved the distinctive look of Frankenheimer's movies from this period (such as the way he profiles faces in the distinct forefront while showing other interesting pieces in the background). Also, I've always been curious about Janet Leigh's role in The Manchurian Candidate. Her character seems relatively unsubstantial for such a big name actress.

I found McCabe to be beautiful, haunting, and funny. Some of the dialog was intentionally mumbled, but the audience can hear and understand the dialog that is meant to be heard. As with Altman's trademark technique of over-lapping dialog, it's meant to add realism to the scenes. McCabe is one of my favorite movies, possibly top ten, and I would pre-order the Criterion blu release yesterday if I could.

The thing a lot of people don't seem to get about Altman is how revolutionary he was for his time and place (70's/Hollywood). His films may not seem revolutionary now, because many of those techniques are now commonplace, but he was a true visionary.

I thought I was done buying Criterions for the year, but driving by a B&N store, I just had to stop in knowing there was a sale going on. Ended up leaving the store with 12 Angry Men (long overdue) and Frances Ha (a blind buy).

I am not implying anything. With those 3 films, it is not a matter of taste but getting used to the films themselves. SDIM is reasonably straightforward but TMC and S are anything but. I did not jump up and down the first time I saw either of them but they are the sort of films that grow on most viewers with repeated viewings. SDIM and TMC were more relevant during the Cold War paranoia that prevailed at the time but Seconds is non-political and pseudo-futuristic and so can be applied to contemporary times with a bit of imagination. What I liked most about the film was its depiction of the secondary characters (pun intended). Despite all the smiling and dancing, one can sense the emotional coldness prevailing the background to the extent that the end, though shocking, is not completely unexpected.

How sweet it is. Amazon matched BB's price on Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project. ($64.99)

I guess we'll agree to disagree. The Manchurian Candidate has to be one of the easiest 'political' films to follow that I have ever seen and this is coming from a person who isn't too savvy when it comes to political knowledge.

Seconds is like sci-fi lite, so I don't get that either. It is, as many people have drawn the comparison, about as easy to digest as a Twilight Zone episode.

curious... why didn't you just get it from Best Buy? would have been free shipping at that price.

just got back from BN, they let me use a 20% coupon and my 10% member savings . I did pick up Investigation of a Citizen as planned, but as I was looking through what they had, In The Realm of the Senses caught my eye. Had Pale Flower and Royal Tenenbaums in my hand as well, but went with In The Realm of the Senses instead. Hoping I enjoy it.

To me, In the Realm of the Senses, is like a couple of others in the collection, namely Salo and Antichrist. I've watched them but have no desire to own them. They are all well-made films and I felt like I needed to see them but I just didn't think they would be ones I would re-watch.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind as I am watching. It may go up for trade along with Salo over on that thread eventually.

Anyone have a replacement insert of Chungking that you picked up but ended up not using? I put off picking up the replacement case/insert for too long, apparently.
