I really loved Le Havre, too. There are so many things going on at any one moment of the film that it stands up well under repeated viewing. The images alone would make for that, but when you add in the engaging story, the allusions to Poetic Realism, and the talent/look of the actors, it becomes one of my favorite movies.

The Eclipse Leningrad Cowboys didn't work on any of those levels for me; I don't see myself going back to that set. But if you wanted to go for something a little closer to Le Havre, I'd point you to the Eclipse Proletariat Trilogy. These three have a lot of connections to Le Havre, and the set and later movie complement each other well. Le Havre is still my favorite Kaurismäki, but the Proletariat Trilogy is worthwhile and very re-watchable. And it's kinda fun thinking about links among all the films.

Sounds to me like it's exactly what I was hoping it was. I was also sure the Leningrad Cowboys set wouldn't do much for me. (I'm somewhat curious to watch the first one, but the other two - Nah)

Thanks!

Which months are the Criterion sale? I know that B&N does it in December and over the Summer (July?). Doesn't the Criterion Shop have one as well?

Not Criterion related, but did anyone catch comic Patton Oswalt's picks the other night on TCM? A couple, that I saw, were totally new to me-The Wind Journeys and Aaltra. The first was one of the most beautifully filmed movies I've seen and the second was one of the darkest black comedies I've watched. I was impressed because, it seems, most of their Guest Programmers do safe picks like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, etc. but it was a fun night.

Watched The Heiress today on the recommendations of you guys yesterday (and I'd been putting it off for a while) and yep, brilliant film. What an ending.

If the rumored cut with an extra 40 minutes does come to fruition with Criterion's proper release down the road, I completely welcome it. There are few films that verge on 3 hours that I would say are too short, but this is one of them. Let's just hope the full special edition comes before 2014 closes.
Thanks for your thoughts, Brandon. I too thought the same about those two films listed, so maybe I'll feel the same about Blue. I can't wait to check it out on BluRay!

Yes! I am very glad you did. Olivia de Havilland really had range, which is what it took to sell that final scene.

Wow. I cannot wait to pick that film up. Unsure if I can wait for the special edition! I wanna see it now! And I'm definitely checking out the other two films you mentioned.

I'm wondering if this edition will make its way to Redbox.

Would they get an NC-17 film?

As I was posting that I was thinking 'eh, they're not really shy about graphically violent stuff' (ie strong Rs aren't necessarily an issue) but I wasn't really thinking about the rating itself. That's a good point though, it could be a big deal.

Glad you loved it. I still think about it and it's been almost a month since my showing of it.

Can't wait until it's released on Blu-ray.

Director Elio Petri's A Quiet Place in the Country. The MOD DVD release uses a pretty good transfer. Included are Italian Dolby Digital 2.0 and English Dolby Digital 2.0 tracks, with optional English subtitles. Anamorphic transfer. The only extra is the original trailer for the film.

REPOST

A quick note that Minerva's great release of director Elio Petri's Lulu the Tool a.k.a La classe operaia va in paradiso (1971) is back in circulation. Starring Gian Maria Volonté, Mariangela Melato, and Gino Pernice.

The release comes with optional English subtitles and a fantastic booklet with all of the content in English and Italian. Top transfer as well

p.s. You could also order a copy through Amazon's merchant Fictions, which is Raro's crew:

We can hope it slips through the cracks or something. I definitely would rather wait for the SE if possible. I wish they just released that version FIRST. I don't see the point in releasing two versions..

Went into Frances Ha not knowing too much about it. Happy to say that I enjoyed it quite a bit. Loved the b/w style they went with. And I could definitely see why it is compared to Juno, but Frances has her own unique charm.

Glad I picked this one up!

Frances Ha seems to be a controversial choice with some. I loved it myself.

I recently purchased it as a blind buy during the November sale, but I have not had a chance to watch it yet.

Last night, I purchased Nashville and Grey Gardens in the B1G1 sale, and when I arrived home, my Nosferatu order was waiting for me.

Needless to say, I am a very happy man!

No, but I've barely watched many films from my Hitchcock box set, so I think it's time to start catching up

It's an absolute marvel. Carne's best in my opinion. Very sly and dark comedy. The accompanying booklet will also really shed light on its cultural significance for the time. I, without hesitation, recommend a blind buy.
