I'm tempted to get the DVD for now so I can at least watch it. But I'm not a fan of buying DVD's anymore, lol.

My final Criterion haul of 2013:
Rashomon High and Low The Complete Jean Vigo Late Spring Jubal In the Mood for Love Woo hoo! As I posted earlier, I had the first four on reserve for payday today. I decided on the last two this afternoon before going to the store. Jubal is one that I've been eyeing for a long while, ever since buying the other Delmer Daves Criterion, 3:10 to Yuma, several months back. I've really had 1950s CinemaScope movies on heavy rotation lately, and I cannot get enough of the look of these films, so the urge hit me to pull the trigger on this one. In the Mood for Love is the wild card of this haul. This is my first Wong Kar-Wai film, and I'm flying blind going into it, but I've always heard such amazing things. The colors on the screenshots look stunning, and I'm sure that this will be a sweet eye candy Blu-ray. I also figured, in my shallow logic, that I am already buying three movies today that are ranked in the Sight & Sound Magazine Top 50, so I may as well make it four movies. |

On the Criterion FB page they indicate a March release as being hinted on tumbler.
http://criterioncollection.tumblr.com/. I would say The Great Beauty is going to be released, but the Bergman hint could indicate Cries and Whispers being announced. |

And re: Nashville, I've never understood why everyone doesn't have him in their personal pantheon like I do, though there are many people who don't care for his stuff. I mostly enjoy his movies that have a large ensemble with several storylines that wander around and occasionally cross each other: Nashville, A Wedding, The Company, Prêt-à-Porter, and even Gosford Park. And I love Prairie Home Companion and don't care if I'm the only person in the world who does. What a strong statement the end of that film makes from a director who is actually staring his own death in the face while making this last film. I like the way all these films are about something bigger than the sum of the individual story lines -- a description of a community or exam of an idea from different perspectives. And it's something that seems especially cinematic to me and hard to pull off in other media. It's similar to what I see in Renoir's Rules of the Game and in some of PT Anderson's movies like Boogie Nights and Magnolia. I like movies like Nashville because they are a refreshing change from story lines that only focus on one or two characters. Oooops.....rambled a bit here. Anyway, I hope Nashville continues to grow in your esteem. |

It's funny that you mention The Rules of the Game, because I also thought about that movie when I was watching Nashville the other night. I do predict that I'll grow fonder of the Altman film as I watch it more. I watched the commentary track the other night almost immediately after watching the main film, and I was surprised at how a few previously unnoticed moments reverberated with me more the second time around. |

I noticed Criterion didn't bother to change the "Behave yourselves. Grandma and Grandma will be with us." line at the very beginning of Chapter 6 of Tokyo Story. It was incorrect on the old DVD as well. You'd think they'd have at least taken another look at the English translation before giving the disc their seal of approval. It's a minor error but this tells me they ported over the subtitles and left it at that. Disappointing.

David Lynch needs to be on Critter as well. Here's hoping your predictions come true. |
