I first saw LAWRENCE OF ARABIA back in college on 16mm (pan-and-scan), and a few years later got the chance to see it in 70mm with magnetic sound twice, once on the incredibly huge Cooper Cinerama screen in Minneapolis, later again in 70mm but on a much smaller screen at a regional revival theatre. I watched the new DVD when it came out about a decade ago, which was better than the pan & scan 16mm but just couldn't recreate the 70mm experience. I've been holding off watching new Blu-ray but really need to watch it soon. This week's constant subzero weather has been making me think of it, and today's announcement might just be the deciding factor if I can round up a few other interested viewers for my basement theatre.

I think the only other O'Toole films I've got on Blu-ray are ZULU DAWN (which I've never gotten around to watching at all yet, so that's another good winter choice), BECKET (great film, disappointingly soft transfer) and smaller parts in TROY, RATATOUILLE, THE BIBLE, and the infamous CALIGULA.

➊ For those who don't know the Charles...to paraphrase a friend of mine, when God was in Boston (which is, like, all the time, because He's omnipresent) that's where he went to see movies. Too bad it's no longer around.
To a generation of Bostonians, the Charles Cinema only played three movies, and we stood in line for them all.

(I had to go to a doctor's appointment at the spiffy new Mass General complex two years ago, and nobody remembered there had ever once been a theater where their office was standing. )

That's sad. D.C. had some great old cinemas when I lived there but checking recently it seems like only the Uptown is still like it once was. (Not-subdivided)

Sad to hear about O'Toole; one of my favorites. I loved the acting duels between him and Burton in Becket and Hepburn in The Lion in Winter. Would love to see someone upgrade the latter.

Now that Ive graduated from college, I should totally pop Dazed and Confused in. I would have done it on the day of my last final, but the notion of watching the film during the winter is weird. May is usually the best time...especially when Alice Cooper's "School's Out" is booming through my sound system.

Ah, the Cooper. I remember seeing The Abyss there on one of the many, many occasions I visited friends in the Twin Cities. I was quite impressed.

I can easily imagine which three you're referring to, but I remember seeing several great films there.

I just picked up the DVD set of bergmans trilogy. For some reason I am having a hard time with this purchase, I feel like they are going to release blus of these any minute. And it was expensive as hell. Too much if you ask me

It's a bad time to be a celebrity, what with Joan Fontaine having passed away today as well. At least she and Peter O'Toole died of old age, instead of in a freak accident.

It seems the Fontaine one was a hoax? I can't find any legit sources saying otherwise...

While I admired parts of Caligula including O'Tooles's performance, the film did not work for me as a whole, and I feel that his five best performances where the ones I listed, and in the order they are listed in. In fact, I would list his performances in The Lion in Winter, Venus, and Goodbye, Mr. Chips as numbers 6, 7, and 8.

You can't get much more legit than Variety: http://variety.com/2013/film/news/jo...96-1200960743/

She has to be one of the last of the Golden Age stars, other than child stars like Shirley Temple and Robert Blake. Doris Day is still around, but she started out at the tail end of the Golden Age.

The Hollywood Reporter posted it too.
Don't forget that her sister Olivia De Havilland is still kickin'! Still got Mickey Rooney and Kirk Douglas too

Blake doesn't die, people around him do.

There's also Luise Rainer, the first actor or actress to win two Oscars. Still alive at 103 years old!

Edit: Apparently Tom Laughlin of Billy Jack fame died a couple days ago. Well that was a quick celebrity death trio.

Review for Arte Video's Les Parapluies de Cherbourg is up. Looks like a great transfer. Hope we hear something from CC soon.

Thanks, I guess I just didn't want it to be true :S

As others have said, there are still a few of the old greats around. Lauren Bacall is another that hasn't been mentioned! She's apparently doing a guest spot in Family Guy this season lol. But it's always sad when the greats pass on, and for two in one day like this? Tragic...
