After a quick look at iMDB, I am more drawn towards the children based films Nobody Knows & I Wish. Always interesting to see through the eyes of a child.
Kore-eda has a knack for casting wonderful child actors, including Yagira Yuya from "Nobody Knows", who won the Best Actor award at Cannes. The young cast of "I Wish" are so natural and charming.

You missed a good one at TIFF with "Like Father, Like Son". I was able to catch it at HIFF and it was excellent. The scheduling makes it hard sometimes, with late shows or some overlapping each other.

I went for a package at TIFF and was only able to use it during the final 6 days. They scheduled LF, LS in the first week and the one screening that would have been doable clashed with tennis

Looking forward to checking out the two films

Persona or McCabe and Mrs. Miller?

For those that have seen them, which one would you choose? I have the opportunity to see them in 35mm, but I can only see one.

The above review has me excited. Thief and Rififi are both Day One purchases for me.

You are not blind .. there is absolutely a shift towards teal.

Look at the following older capture ...

Im not a big fan of color timing changes .. but this one will probably be fine.

this thread has some more comparison images ...

This is retroactive thinking.

You are assuming that there was no move to that pushed up cherry look some years ago.

Anyhow.

True .. but this move towards teal really was not common until digital grading came on the scene. So Id bet my bank account that the film was NOT originally released like this.

Does anyone know what the likely hood of some older films such as Vampyr or The Testament of Dr. Mabuse getting upgrades? I'm watching Vampyr as we speak and the lead in kind of implies that it might not ever happen. If they had to compile a DVD version from mixed language copies from different sources would the elements even be there for an HD upgrade?

Three comments:

1. "Push towards teal" implies that what ended up on the DVD, or VHS, was correct to begin with. My opinion on the matter is in fact exactly the opposite: Everything, from the format's technical limitations (I refer to DVD) to the total lack of control during the DVD days (as opposed to the type of technical control there is today) gives me the confidence to believe that a massive amount of films that were released on DVD actually had very compromised color schemes. So, if anything, there was a move towards the pushed up cherry look - which is being revised now on many, many releases.

2. From comments that I have seen since such 'controversial' releases as Total Recall, I believe that there is a very large group of people who are simply used to the skewed specs DVD introduced -- from horrible sharpening to awkward contrast levels to...the pinkish cherry look DVD releases favored as "original". Things are different now.

3. I am in fact familiar with the article you linked and disagree with a lot of what is written in it. Yes, there have been anomalies with modern color grading, and some directors have made massive mistakes, but these are anomalies that are a drop in the sea of poor content DVD introduced to the public.

There is a lot more that is on the right track with Blu-ray, including this film, than there is on DVD.

While color timing is a subjective topic, what is not is the innate color certain films stocks produced in the 70s and 80s.

I work in post production so I am familiar with what is currently going on in terms of color grading. Teal/Cyan is definitely a term that comes up frequently in terms of color choices. In our case our lead colorist is not a big fan of that kind of treatment in regards to regrading an older film.

Some people enjoy the sickly blue/teal color wash being applied these days .. I am not one of them. Seems like Mann is however ;-)

All this being said ... I cannot wait for this blu ray. =)

Same here, I'm so glad that the blu-ray will finally do this movie justice. Can't wait to see this film in glorious HD.

I actually had Vampyr in my hand earlier this week, but decided against it, afraid it might get a upgrade soon. So if anyone has any inside information, i'd appreciate it as well!

I really doubt it. Although I might've said the same about Nosferatu, I'd still place my money that this doesn't happen with Vampyr. A little research will show why. On a side note, the DVD set from criterion is one of their best designs in my opinion.

I wouldn't count on seeing an upgrade for either film soon. That said, both films are worth picking up as is, even with the risk of an upgrade in the foreseeable future. I was very close to picking up Vampyr during the November Criterion/B&N sale, and only balked because I have a previous DVD from Image/Blackhawk, and decided to use the money for a BD of a film I didn't already have. The Criterion edition of Vampyr, however, is an outstanding package.

Yeah, it seemed very cool even though it was still wrapped. Thinking I may have to break down and get it. :-\
