That prompted me to buy "Wings of Desire" when I saw it at Borders (with a 40% off coupon).

"Wings" was good, but I thought that "Paris" was better. Wim Wenders said that he didn't want to copy Paris, Texas and he certainly kept his word. It's a very different film. It has a "French Film" feel to it, but with a Wenders sensability about it.

Please let me know what you think about Paris, Texas and if you decide to purchase Wings of Desire.
I just finished "Paris, Texas." It is a good movie albeit emotionally draining. It is not a movie to watch every week, in my opinion. The movie is also haunting. It is haunting in the fact that it serves as a mirror to the viewer. It invites us nay it compels us to travel to that still small "Paris, Texas" deep in our heart, where old wounds still ache and at times call out.

Why won't the 20% off link work for me? I click on the link and add a film to the cart and it takes 11% off but won't prompt me to allow for a 20% off code!

I finally saw my 3rd Criterion film in Yojimbo and I liked it. I hated CCOBB and I love Last Emperor, which I will get eventually, any other Criterions I'd like?

Actually I was thinking the other day I'd like to see them do a decent version of Olympia. The current (still?) DVD is suppose to be pretty weak, and recall my returning it unopened it was allegedly so bad. Is that also true of the Triumph DVD? Of course, well-done blu-rays would be most welcome.

My last order with B&N was for a box set. The box set arrived with its topside crunched. I hate that. So, my experience (this has happened before) is that boxsets just about always arrive with some type of damage, heavy books sometimes too. DVDs and blu-rays and CDs usually arrive ok (not always though). I don't order a lot from them, but enough now to have a pretty good idea of what I'll be getting damage-wise. At least they don't use amazon's bubble bags to ship in.

The Riefensthal films have always seemed like a double-edged sword to me. On the one hand, you want to preserve them as important historical documents, but on the other hand, they will always be Nazi propaganda, so you also want to ensure you don't glorify that by exaggerating the importance of the films. I think that they might not come until the format is practically mainstream.

I think that depends on the individual and how much he/she enjoys it, correct?

Yes...I certainly agree with your assessment of Paris, Texas. VERY emotionally draining! The acting is just SO GOOD...I can really feel and slightly relate to Harry Dean's character (Travis). His heart is in the right place, he's just hit a lot of bad luck in his past life.

Wings is a great movie...don't get me wrong. I think I'll get even more out of it with a second viewing. I want to now check out the commentaries by Wenders on both movies.

Peter Falk played a bigger role, than I had first thought he would. He takes that movie to a different place and grounds it somewhat.

Thanks for your insight!

Default Z (standard DVD release)

I just wanted to say that for those who still buy a Criterion DVD or two, if you don't own Z you should buy it or add it to your Criterion Collection. I really wish this would be on a fast track to blu.

So if there are any upcoming Criterion sales at Barnes & Noble etc, don't hesitate to put the DVD on your list.

I concur, though I haven't watched the Criterion version yet; a few months before it was announced I decided I really needed to get around to watching my long time sitting on the shelf, blindly bought DVD copy and finally did so. Great flick. Maybe I'll dig out that Criterion in a little bit.

The latest Criterion newsletter has a 10%-off code good for the week, it says... 10BACK.

Also, the image hints at a blu-ray release for "Breathless."

Oh, and it also mentions the Chaplin films to be shown theatrically starting July 16th by Janus Films.

Man I hate double dipping on that stupid director.

This means it is coming this year. Move aside Seven Samurai. Move aside Wes Anderson, you punk.

I can't believe I didn't get that clue, I always think to hard on the clues and omit the obvious.

I will buy that on Blu for sure. :-)

For those interested, DVDBeaver has a review up for the "By Brakhage" blu-ray set.
