I think theres something wrong with my Paris, Texas disk. Most of the movie has a amazing picture quality, but sometimes the whole picture just change, gets pixelated and looks cheap and downloaded. Does anybody know what Im talking about?

Actually, I just realized it's a review just for the first part so far. The other parts, according to the review, are to be viewed at a later date.

Sorry, I can't help, but I didn't notice anything like you mentioned when viewing my copy of the "Paris, Texas" blu-ray. I definitely don't recall seeing any pixelation on my screen.

Anyone wanna help me break down movie history themes/periods/genres (i.e. Silent Films, Musicals, French New Wave, Italian Neorealism, Noir, etc.) so that I can give my girlfriend a history of cinema? I wanna kind of keep it generalized, but at the same time hit the influential periods... probably no more than 5 or so films from a certain style, though, so that she's not too overwhelmed by the experience. Some things like the New German Cinema covers such a large span of years, so I'm not sure how to tackle it. I'm trying not to break it down by genre, but I'm afraid it will be at some point.

So, I guess for right now I'd need to make a list of the more prominent themes/periods/genres and from there I can start weeding out the notable films.

- French New Wave (late 1950s and 1960s)
- Italian Realism (1944 - 1952)
- New German Cinema (1962 - 1982)
- Poetic Realism (1930s - 1940s)
- American Independent Cinema (late 1960s-1970s)

I would say to add:

The late 60's-70's period in American Independent Cinema
A Woman Under the Influence (Cassavetes)
"Flesh" "Trash" or "Heat" (Morrissey)
Easy Rider (given, Dennis Hopper was an Independent filmmaker, but was a studio movie)
Faces (Cassavetes)
an Exploitation film

The French New Wave and the Independent scene of the 60's-70's American Cinema are my 2 fav subjects (anyone surprised?). I just love the gritty anything goes filmmaking of that time.

Default Criterion Response

I wrote to Criterion asking if the upcoming IMAGE ENT releases for Mona Lisa and Time Bandits will contain their commentary tracks. (Much like the Image releases for Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein)

here is the response.

Thanks for your email!

I'm sorry, Image releases of MONA LISA and TIME BANDITS will not include our supplements.

Thanks for all your support! If you have any more questions, just let me know!

Best,

Jon

Yeah, unfortunately, those releases are only going to include a trailer, I believe.

So do you want us to make suggestions of the movies to show or just genres for right now?

Yeah, they also came out with a "Paul Morrissey" collection not too long ago. I have been wanting to get that set because of a doc is included I believe. Those films are not for everyone, but could be funny in the right viewers' eyes. Morrissey captured comedy and tragedy in the same feelings to me that no Hollywood movie can ever top. He also had a actor/camera love affair that only a few did better with his camera and Joe Dallesandro.

Releasing Breathless =/= pushing aside Seven Samurai. I'd be a little surprised if we didn't get both prior to the holiday sales period this Fall.

Hey, I'm new here, just had to say: Criterion rocks my socks! Slowly building up my collection (21 of their Blu-rays so far), alas it's difficult on a student's budget, but damn there's so many releases this summer (and possibly in the fall it seems) that I'm gonna want to grab. "M", "Stagecoach", "The Red Shoes", "Paris, Texas", and "The Leopard" are on the top of my "to buy" list right now.

Not sure if anyone's posted anything about this before or not (pardon my ignorance ), but just a question: any idea why Criterion hasn't released any animated films? Seems kinda weird to me because there's plenty out there that definitely deserve the Criterion treatment!

Nah, I'm just searching out the themes right now. For the themes I'm more familiar with I'll have no problem picking out the essential films, but I'll probably come back for suggestions on the others I'm not so familiar with.

Not sure about Criterion's lack of animated titles, but if you're a Facebooker or Tweeter I'm sure you could post something to ask them. I'm pretty sure Criterion released "Akira" back in the laserdisc days, though.
