It looks like Button has a standard Blu-ray case with a sleeve rather than the traditional Blu-ray case. Is it true then that there is no folding case for this title? Any word on the packaging for the Canadian release?
Now, when you say "traditional blu-ray case," are you referring to the Criterion cardboard case that was used for their first 8 releases on blu-ray? Or, are you referring to the newer clear plastic case that Criterion has used for "The Wages Of Fear" and "In The Realm Of The Senses"?

Since Criterion worked with Paramount on the "Benjamin Button" release, it seams they had to compromise and go with a standard blue-colored case that Paramount and other major companies use.

As far as the Canadian release, I've heard that it has bilingual packaging, but is still similar to the US blu-ray release of "Benjamin Button."

At least we know one of the picks will be from the Amazon contest, right?

I wouldn't say that necessarily... That could be used for future deals....(like deal of the day ) or could be a litmus test for what to release in SEPTEMBER, DECEMBER.... or perhaps next year....... It's unlikely they have all 4 of those films "prepared" for shipping/release for june/july or whatever date the upcoming title(s) will likely have

If that poll was a "Definitive" factor in what they were to release/announce.... they'd have to have all four prepared prior to setting the poll up..... I just don't see that....

I'd really love to get my hands on some of Criterion's Blu Ray's, but as they are region coded, no chance.

You could probably buy a cheaper region A player..... but yeah.... it's tough...

I need a region free player (legally, if there is one) but right now, I just buy what I can in the States.

still no shipping notice on "Benjamin Button".

I voted for Kwaidan yesterday in the Amazon contest.

Hmmm...so tired of waiting for ben buttons. On vacation this week, nice not being at work, though I may go broke with all the free time to browse the internet looking for deals. Not to mention the local shops. Bought 6 Blus the other day for under $100. No Criterions, have all those :P

Really though Criterion would have announced the new August pre-orders today, this being the closest release date to the 15th. Maybe tomorrow.

Everybody relize that Ben Buttons is the only Criterion Bu on slate for May?! Still no excuse for not shipping on time.

The issue isn't so much legality, it's that you have to be comfortable with after-market modification on your player, which voids the manufacturer's warranty and puts the "life" of your Blu-ray player in the hands and at the discretion of the company who sold it to you. This is especially important to consider when you take into account that you will pay a premium for the modified player.

Funny anecdote: I didn't realize for many weeks that my player was set to Region B until I popped in The Third Man and got a region incompatibility message. I also lost the paper with the remote codes to reset it, so hopefully I'll be getting an e-mail soon...

And WHY is Last Year at Marienbad still $29.99??? WHY AMAZON?!?!?!

I believe Ran was to be the other one...

I'm still very uncomfortable about this TCCBB release and at this point, I really can't consider it a Criterion disc. Yes it has a spine number and booklet and so on, but it also lacks the clear case, is priced differently, and just has a different "feel" to it. It really isn't like Criterion to release a film like this, and if it wasn't for the Blu-ray exclusivity (which Paramount ISN'T promoting in their ads), this would seem exactly like Armageddon and The Rock. Criterion isn't a label for big-budget Hollywood films, unless they have matured to "classic" or "cult" status. I just hope that Criterion reaps a huge benefit from this, and I hope at some point they blog about their choice like they did with Revanche.

I haven't seen the film yet, but I won't be purchasing it at Criterion prices.

Well, unfortunately, in the times we live in the 15th usually means the 15th and not the 13th or 14th. I think Criterion just shoots for the middle of the month, which just so happens to be sometime around the 15th or 16th of each month. We probably won't see the new releases up on Criterion's site until sometime over the weekend.

Did you not get in on "Last Year At Marienbad" when it was $26.99, McCrutchy? That was the price for a while when it first went up on Amazon.

No, I was really on the fence because I have the other three already pre-ordered and I shouldn't be spending all this money.

If it comes back down to $26.99 I will nab it now though.

Well, the good thing about pre-ordering with Amazon, at least, is that you'll always get the lowest price up until release date and you're not gonna be charged until it ships. So, it's still okay to have everything pre-ordered and then you can make a more informed financial decision when the actual release date gets closer, and that way you're not missing out on any of the fluctuating pricing structure.
