Hm I like Japanese Summer a lot, but it's more of a mood piece for me so I can't easily defend it, the closest theme I could really pin to it is the formation of Japanese identity in the post-war era. From that description it sounds like you might like Boy the most out of those, which probably has the most in common with his post-ATG period (whilst I like In the Realm, Merry Christmas, and Empire of Passion, they just don't feel like the same Oshima to me). Diary and Will on Film are radical, innovative, and political films that seem like they could go either way for you. Death by Hanging is probably the most political of the list, but it's also a searing black comedy that's sometimes reminiscent of Bunuel, and as with the other two Korean films Oshima made it's full of emotion. The Ceremony also features Bunuelian sequences, but is more about the political structure of a family and the weight that the members at the bottom of that structure feel, like Boy it has more of a traditional style so I suppose these two would be the safest bets.

I've just looked and it seems they also have all of his Shochiku films on Hulu as well, from A Town of Love and Hope to Night and Fog in Japan. I'd recommend The Sun's Burial the most out of those, a noir that bursts with youthful aggression.

That sounds right. Another John Frankenheimer film makes sense.

I hope that the red sun is Red Sun, because I've been on the fence about ordering the Japanese Blu-ray for a long while now.
