Paramount.

I hope they will have a great transfer to blu-ray soon.

I have 3. Vivre sa vie hangs in my kitchen and Mystery Train (smaller but heavier paper stock) hangs in my living room. Also, I have Pierrot but the frame busted over the summer because the moisture weakened the command strips and it fell (at 3am one night ).

I really doubt Paramount will need to restore it at all - the Film Foundation restored it in 2010 and I think it was done in 4K. That's what's presumably on the Australian Blu-Ray (but I don't have it yet and haven't seen any reviews either).

Definitely let us know what you think about the Aussie transfer. After Yami's comment about them possibly using 2010 restoration, I am very interested.

I am glad that some film viewers still appreciate this fantastic film, in college the only way to see the film was through a beat up VHS copy.

I will for sure, but it'll take time as shipments from Australia take forever to arrive.

Someone from the Aussie forum, said the A/V quality is very nice and I hope he's right.

I was fortunate enough to see the print when it toured a few years ago. It's immaculate. Whomever releases it won't need to do any clean up.

I don't know that for sure but, as the French, Spanish and Japanese Blu-Rays did, I'd be disappointed if they didn't!

I visited the Trevi fountain during the day, years ago. It is actually nicely hidden and gorgeous; it must look beautiful at night. If it were not for all tourist walking towards it, I would have not found it. Although Via Veneto was not as impressive as in La Dolche Vita (I guess it was, back in its day)

I was more impressed by the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini in Piazza Navona where I had diner that day.

I've been lucky to go twice too. I read once that before the film not many people even knew that fountain existed. Shame it is overun with tourists now.

La Vie de Bohème Blu-ray Review

One of my very good friends on the site also helped me get Aki Kaurismaki's earlier film, I Hired a Contract Killer, on Blu-ray from Finland. (A good number of the Finnish director's films are now out on Blu-ray there). The transfer is very nice.

You lucky people.

I want to someday tour Europe/Scandinavia and explore the places and architecture as a film buff, will be more interesting that way...

Sweden will be my first stop, Bergman Fever.

Istarted to watch Lovers this afternoon, but I had to stop the stream as I thought the 1.33:1 aspect ratio was rather strange. I subsequently did some research and I found out it should have been in the traditional 1.66:1. Ugh, Netflix disappoints me so much.
You are welcome Abdrewes.

Yes, definitely, 1.66:1 is the correct aspect ratio.

At this point, however, unless you can attend a theatrical screening somewhere Lovers... has to be experienced on a great Blu-ray. I have that Arrow DVD release, and even though it is clearly superior to the Miramax release (totally different color scheme), the transfer is average at best by modern standards. This film has some absolutely amazing photography -- everything was filmed on the real Pont-Neuf, one of Paris' true landmarks -- and the colors, light/shadow balance, etc., simply do not look right on the DVD. (The sequence in the subway where Binoche and Lavant burn the posters should look magnificent in high-definition).

By the way, there is another very beautiful film with a bridge in the title: Patrice Leconte's The Girl on the Bridge, with Daniel Auteuil and a very young Vanessa Paradis. Have you seen it? It is shot in black and white, really beautiful cinematography.

Auteuil plays a lonely knife thrower who meets a young woman on a bridge who is getting ready to commit suicide.

This is the famous song from the film:

It is very disappointing that we are yet to see any of Leconte's beautiful films on Blu-ray. Severin said that they would release The Hairdresser's Husband quite some time ago, but nothing came out. Good thing that at least Cohen Media has now listed Love Street, which probably means that a Blu-ray is upcoming.

Girl on the Bridge - I have the Australian release, but the UK release is just as good. Both are anamorphic. I am fairly certain, however, that the U.S. release wasn't. So beware.

Have a great weekend, Abdrewes

Hey Matti.

Do you mean the DVD or Blu-ray release? I can check in a few minutes, but I am pretty sure that I only have a DVD release. Finnish releases of Kaurismaki films, in addition to the ones I have already listed, I have Light in the Dusk (from Sandrew), and Juha (on DVD). I don't have these on Finnish Blu-rays.

I will probably pick them all on Blu-ray very soon because I really like Kaurismaki's work. Excluding a few shorts, I think I have everything on DVD.

I sometimes regret selling my Koch DVD of La Dolche Vita when I was clearing out my DVD collection in early 2013, but I figured that it's probably just a matter of time before a great Blu-ray edition lands on our shores. The opening sequence with the helicopter and the statue always slays me.

I mean the Blu-ray release. Sorry, I should've been more precise. I think I PM'd you some time ago about this as it would be great to have some comparison shots between the two. I thought the Finnish release was pretty good AV wise. But seeing that you do not own the Blu-ray yet, you're probably better off sticking with just the Criterion instead of importing the bare bones Finnish release.

Default OT Her!

Saw Her today. I liked the movie a lot spike jonze's look into the future is a sad one, technology is a scary and cool thing. Made me think of the Allan Moore interview I read recently. where he said the stuff we create isn't the most important thing it's the friends we meet and interact with...

No problem, Matti. But I will definitely be upgrading the DVDs. I will post the transfer credits for La Vie... in the review when I receive them, but I am almost certain that the foundation for this transfer was a master that originated in Finland. So there should not be any major discrepancies. I will make sure to PM you when the update is live.

The Criterion release is nice to have because it has very good extras (quality). The interview with Andre Wilms was most definitely done when Criterion prepared material for Le Havre.
