Being either a film, art or history buff makes visiting Europe an even greater experience. You look out for those favorite scenic areas. You also learn to appreciate those film shots a lot more.

Bergman, Tarkovsky, Fellini and Bresson are my top directors.

A criterion release of Persona is mana from Heaven for me. The US DVD release was bitterly cropped. March cannot come any sooner. It will be really hard to top that release.

Traffic - Great film filled with great performances.
Down by Law - Jarmusch's best film.
The Spy Who Came in From The Cold - Richard Burton is great here.
Paris, Texas - Possibly my favorite film of all time.
Broadcast News - Adorable. Loved every minute of it.
Blow Out - Not a favorite of mine but it has a huge following here.
These.

I saw TIFF's Cronenberg exhibition today and I really hope they tour this thing. It was a very cool experience. The lack of focus on his later works was a little disappointing, I think A History of Violence had the smallest section after his pre-Shivers works. It was pretty surreal seeing stuff like the Telepod from The Fly or a Mugwump from Naked Lunch (the one prop we were actually able to take a picture of or with).

One of the great things about Europeans is that they are very creative which clearly shows in their art, films, food... that beauty & rawness is still intact even in these modern times.

Persona will be day-one for me and if they ever decide to release Scenes from a Marriage on Blu-ray... I'll be so happy - probably do the chicken dance.

I think being a film fan definitely enriches travel experiences. My wife and I went to Japan a bit ago, and while it would have been amazing no matter what, getting to visit graves of great Japanese directors, or visiting locations from Lost in Translation, or even something like the Ghibli Museum... all better because of great films.

I doubt we will ever visit a country without a few film related destinations in the cards.

Cronenberg isn't my favorite (though I like his more recent stuff), but I thought the exhibit was really well done. I didn't realize before seeing the exhibit how many ties he had to Toronto. Fitting to have the exhibit there.

In hindsight I wish I had given the exhibit a little more time, but we had tickets to a master class and wanted to secure good seats. At least I got a photo with the mugwump.

Cronenberg is one of my all time favorite directors, so I was glad I got the chance to see it. I gave myself an hour between Inside Llewyn Davis and The F Word and I felt that I had enough time to soak it in. I do wish that they didn't have the "guide" there, because it kind of killed my ability to go at my own pace. It also caused people to completely overlook the Naked Lunch portion because the guide didn't take them directly in there.

@Pro-B: I was lucky enough to see Lovers on the Bridge on film at my local Art Gallery last year. It was truly stunning and yeah, couldn't accept SD for it now.

@GreatOwl: There's an Australian release of La Dolce Vita out this week incidentally from Umbrella Entertainment. While Aus releases rarely get official reviews on this site, Umbrella has had a handful, but lacking that, the early word is that it has great PQ/AQ. It retails at only $AU19.99, not sure what postage is for you guys though. It's one of my favourite films of all time, and moved me/changed my view of the world probably more than any other film, so I'll be picking it up very soon.

It is. One of the best things to air last year if you ask me.

I just read that Lost Highway went out of print on DVD in the US. I wonder if Criterion may just do a Lynch set with that film, Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive..maybe 1-2 others ??

I have one Australian Blu-ray in my collection. I ordered the Australian edition of Journey to the Centre of the Earth a month ago, because the Twilight Time edition on these shores is sold out. It was a pleasure to upgrade this movie from DVD.

As long as the Australian releases are region free, I'm all good for them. I'll probably hold my horses before pulling the trigger on La Dolce Vita, though, since I suspect that it'll be here in my neck of the woods soon.

(Unrelated, but I've decided to stop putting movie titles in bold font in my posts, since it's cumbersome to do so if I'm typing on my iPhone, and I like uniformity. Old habits are hard to break, though.)

Neither of those films is his best. I'd recommend Band of Outsiders as your next Godard, it's a very fun movie.

Ok, it is 5 days into the New Year and I have yet to watch a film.

I've had a good look at my Criterion shelf (got to start with a Criterion ) and I have decided to go with a film I purchased with my first Barnes & Noble order back in July. I want something light and not too serious so the winner is:

Big Deal on Madonna Street!

In context of time, it is harder to explain what he has done for cinema. The French New Wave brought to the forefront the directors importance, the director as the author.

Also the filming in Godard's film is different than Hollywood studio films of the past. There is more outside filming and jump cuts (supposedly he accidentally invented this technique). The importance of style is given more ground than before; the tone of film noir movies actual inspired many of the French New Wave directors.

So Bob Le Flambleur and Breathless has this cool, laid back style. And of course, Jean Seberg is just gorgeous. I would have definitely bought Herald Tribune everyday, if she was selling the newspaper.
