I have some bad news and some good news...

The bad news is that The Lady from Shanghai will apparently not be released by Criterion this year.

The good news is that a 4K restoration of The Lady from Shanghai is being released as a Turner Classic Movies exclusive Blu-ray/DVD combo on January 27, and that it is now up for pre-order on this link...

http://shop.tcm.com/the-lady-from-sh...ollection_sony

The even better news is that I just pre-ordered myself a copy. $29.94, including shipping.

I don't see any bad news:
Quote:
In partnership with The Film Foundation, Turner Classic Movies and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment proudly present this DVD/Blu-ray combo pack of The Lady from Shanghai (1947)—the first-ever Blu-ray release of the film, featuring a brand-new 4k digital restoration from the original negative.
The price has dropped to $24.99! oh! before shipping

That's awesome! Thanks for the news, Owl. This might sound blasphemous, but I'd almost rather not see some of my anticipated titles be released by Criterion. That way, I have a better chance of snagging them at a price tag closer to $10 at some time in the future. I know that Owl has given a shout out to this film before, but a title like Laura can be had for under $12 (shipping and tax included) and it has a sick transfer, is a wonderful movie by a legit director and has really nice bonus features. I get more excited for titles like that than I do knowing that Criterion is going to release something I'd really like to see on blu.

Wow, that seemed to fly under the radar. I mean, we knew it was coming from somewhere, but I hadn't read about a TCM exclusive anywhere.

Does anyone know how long it will be a TCM exclusive and if it's going to be given a wider release later?

I have no idea how long The Lady from Shanghai will be a TCM exclusive, and I have no idea what the packaging for this Blu-ray/DVD combo will be like.

All that I needed to see before parting ways with my cash was "The Lady from Shanghai", "Blu-ray", and "4K restoration."

The Eddie Muller commentary track ought to be fun. I just read Muller's book, Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir.

LOL, I guess so.

It's just that TCM charges an absolute fortune to ship to Canada, so that's not an option for me. Man, it's times like these that I curse my sister for moving back to Canada from South Dakota!

I was just wrapping up my film noir marathon, too.

Here are the noirs (or noir-ish/neo-noir) titles that I've spent the past two months enjoying...

[Show spoiler]Scarlet Street
The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946)
Panic in the Streets
They Made Me a Fugitive
The Stranger
The Hitch-hiker
The Third Man (Studiocanal Blu-ray)
Film Noir Collection: Volume 1 (Union Station/Appointment with Danger/Dark City/Rope of Sand)
The Big Combo
A Double Life
Plunder Road
Private Hell 36
Crashout
Force of Evil
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye
Cry Vengeance
City That Never Sleeps
Shack Out on 101
The File on Thelma Jordan
Hoodlum Empire
Cloak and Dagger
Secret Beyond the Door
Hell's Half Acre
Ruthless
Body and Soul
Champion
The Dark Mirror
Laura
Sunset Boulevard
Strangers in the Night
White Heat
Suddenly
The Strange Love of Martha Ivers
Kansas City Confidential
Pale Flower
Chinatown
To Live and Die in L.A.
L.A. Confidential
The Woman in the Window (streaming video)
D.O.A. (streaming video)
Pitfall (streaming video)
Detour (streaming video)

I am planning to watch Body Heat (1981) tonight. This weekend, I am going to revisit some old favorites by watching the Film Noir Classics Collection DVD set (The Asphalt Jungle, The Set-Up, Out of the Past, Gun Crazy, and Murder, My Sweet).

Finally, I was planning to end my film noir marathon with Who Framed Roger Rabbit, since this Blu-ray will be arriving at my doorstep this week.

Since I'll be buying Rififi next week, and since Man in the Dark and The Lady from Shanghai are presumably arriving at the end of January, however, it seems that my film noir marathon will never end. Woo hoo! That's cool with me.

Plus, Criterion is also apparently upgrading Ace in the Hole and apparently releasing Riot in Cell Block 11.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, that's an excellent point.

My mind immediately went to Gilda when I saw the news in the TLFS thread last night but yeah, this could be a whole new go-to for a lot of Columbia titles that Criterion might have passed on.

[Show spoiler]On a scale from 1-10 how dorky is it that I got chills while typing that just now?

Are we in Spinal Tap meme territory?

A French Blu-ray of Gun Crazy (1950) was recently released, so I'm hoping that it shows up on these shores. It's a Warner title, though.

I've never came across such extortionate international shipping for a single Blu-Ray as TCM's. $30! Suddenly, Twilight Time seems cheap.

so after a run of about 30 consecutive Criterion titles for which I would (at worst) still give my approval, I found a title that didn't make the cut.

Kes just didn't do it for me. Probably just a matter of personal preference, being that the cinematography was indeed noteworthy and the almost documentary like filming style using non-actors is something I typically find admirable in other films. I guess a was a bit surprised to see that people still used 'thou' and 'thee' in the 20th century. Being that English is my first language, I guess that I am annoyed that I have to put the subtitles on. The characters in Kes made the Gallagher brothers (from the band Oasis) sound like James Earl Jones. The brother was an insufferable prick and the theiving Billy really wasn't any better.

Any thoughts on this one? Any fans of this film out there?

Ha! I, too, had to put the subtitles on for this one. But I enjoyed the film - genuinely moving. Reminds me a lot of another Criterion title, The Kid With a Bike, which I actually like a bit more.

I can see how it is reminiscent of TKWaB and I REALLY liked that one! Something didn't click for me with this one, though.

Here are my top 10 anticipated films for 2014:

1. Interstellar (Looks like more brilliant science fiction from Chris Nolan)
2. Inherent Vice (Oh yes, P.T. Anderson + J. Phoenix? Sign me up!)
3. Only Lovers Left Alive (Jim Jarmusch is one of my fave. directors)
4. Cyber (Michael Mann is too...and this looks awesome!)
5. Noah (I admit, this Aronofsky film might be either brilliant or horrible)
6. Maps to the Stars (Cronenberg! Yesssss! Very intriguing story)
7. I, Origins (Wow, I really like the concept of this film)
8. Knight of Cups (Yes, Malick is on a roll lately with releasing new movies)
9. Under the Skin (Just to see Scarlett as an alien seductress is so worth it)
10. Like Father, Like Son (I like Hirokazu Koreeda's films of substance)

Notable mentions: The Rover, Grand Budapest Hotel and Jupiter Ascending

To those that don't already know, we seem to share similar tastes in actresses.
My top 10 for 2014 from that weblink:

1. Interstellar (Scifi+Nolan+Jessica chastain= opening day for me lol)
2. Inherent Vice (P.T.Anderson is genius, side note: there will be blood is a modern masterpiece)
3. Knight of Cups (Malick is one of my favs been a love affair since thin red line at the theater many moons ago)
4. Bird man (by the director of babel, 12 grams and amores perros love his work)
5. Maps to the stars (sounds awesome the plot)
6. Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes May seem like a one trick pony but his movies always turn out entertaining. Minus Rushmore blek lol)
7. Cyber (Michael Mann nuff said)
8. Under the Skin (we both agree big time why lol)
9. Nymphomaniac (Lars is certifiable with the work he puts out there but your always intrigued with what he creates. Maybe he should finish the dragon tattoo usa trilogy to get his name mainstream?)
10. Noah (love Aronofsky but I'm not feeling this one at all. but I'll go see it just for him)

Notable mentions:
Jupiter Ascending (those matrix guys they have vision I give them that but is there such a thing as too epic lol?)

Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (sounds cool. 2 movies intersecting)

How to catch a Monster (Ryan Gosling directing? It could be cool with the guys he's learned the craft from...)

Unsurprising news today that Barnes & Noble's sales fell over the holiday season. Who knows how long B&N will last, it's probably only a matter of time before it goes the way of Borders. How long that will be is anyone's guess. Are there any other sellers that sell Criterion blu-rays at such a low price? B&N typically has higher original prices, but the 50% sale + additional coupons provides for great deals. Amazon blus don't go down nearly as low.

I absolutely loved Kes. It was bleak and dreary without being oppressive. It hit a lot of emotional notes without being sappy or sentimental. I thought it was very powerful.

And yeah, I immediately had to turn the subs on but whattagonnado.

Have you seen The Red Riding Trilogy? Those Yorkshire accents are even tougher to discern.

I had to turn the subtitles on after the first scene (and then rewatch the first scene again), even though I normally watch loads of British tv and movies without subs. I was surprised by the use of "thou" and "thee" as well, which is one of the reasons why I turned on the subs and rewatched that beginning scene (to found out if that was what they were really saying).

But, unlike you, I loved the film. I felt a strong emotional connection to the character of Billy. I didn't see him as a thief, but more of a victim of his circumstances (impoverished background, less than ideal family and social situations). I think that how a person views the character of Billy (sympathetic or unsympathetic) will be a big factor in whether they like the film.
