B&N typically has higher original prices, but the 50% sale + additional coupons provides for great deals. Amazon blus don't go down nearly as low.
Problem with B&N is it's a fun store to hang out in. Pick up a magazine, read a book, talk with friends and come out not spending a dime. Personally, I would rather buy an ebook because I won't have to worry about where I'm gonna keep it and I wouldn't buy music or movies from them unless it's on sale, like the CC 50% off sales.

What is the deal with the two different soundtracks for Kes? I'm not sure I chose the right one. There were a few external distractions from my viewing experience, so maybe I ought to not dismiss it entirely. I watched it later in the evening and my 4 month old son seems to sleep better while in the room during a black and white film. (I hope this isn't true when he gets older. ) For this one, he was yappin, but I kept watching because I had the subtitles to read.

I prefer to buy all of the digipak Criterion titles in person to make sure that the cardboard cases are in perfect condition, so this is the big thing that I'll miss about physical Barnes & Noble locations if they disappear. The local stores are my to-go places for these new clunky Dual Format packages, so I hope that they stick around for a while longer.

The Barnes & Noble down the street probably sells more food than books. There is always a ton of students and young professionals sitting at the coffee shop with their laptops, and they always have those expensive coffees and cakes in front of them.

One is the original soundtrack, and there's another option that's more international, (American)-English friendly.

Yeah the subtitles are very helpful for this title, but I didn't find it much worse than, say, Trainspotting, and I actually settled in after a while without need (even if I rewound a few lines). Red Riding mentioned above was pretty bad at parts as well.

Hilariously, when I checked out Ken Loach's The Angels' Share in theaters earlier last year it was subtitled, the only such time I've experienced that theatrically with an English-language picture. And that was helpful, too.

Don't know if they were ever screened for the public, however. As far as artfilms up my way, it's basically my basement theatre and Blu-rays from Criterion, Cohen, Kino, Olive, et al., although the local Community Theatre is having a foreign film festival this month and the university has a "Global Visions" film series during the school year. At least one of our two multiplexes tries to plug in an obscure indie film when they have an open screen. Got to see MUD, PROFILE OF A KILLER, ENOUGH SAID, and QUARTET, among others on the big screen with maybe 10-20 other audience members.
Congrats! If you have anything on Youtube I can check out, please PM me anytime. I'm always up for seeing indie movies from a fellow human who was born in my town.

Tougher than Kes? No way. I just watched Red Riding last week, and though it did have its moments, I found the dialects to be much more unintelligible in Kes. Of course, this is all a matter of opinion.

Well, yes, but we're talking about TCM, right? Which is a Warner subsidiary. Seems to me that the TCM label would be just right for a lot of the Warner/MGM/RKO back catalog titles that Warner doesn't want to release on the main label. After all, the folks shopping at the TCM store are more likely to be fans of vintage films.

Good point. I would be thrilled to see TCM release the movies in the Warner Film Noir Classic Collection DVD sets and the Val Lewton horror films on RKO.

I sorely missed having subtitles for two films on DVD (both from Artisan, who didn't generally include subtitling options): Egoyan's Felicia's Journey and Soderbergh's The Limey, because Bob Hoskins's and Terence Stamp's (respective) accents were so thick (deliberately) they were pretty much unintelligible. In fact, in the latter film, there's a scene where Stamp's character delivers this lengthy speech to another character, who then says to Stamp, "There's just one thing I don't understand." Stamp replies, "Wot?" "Every fückin' word you just said."

I seem to recall that there was one Ken Loach film about working class Brits that had subtitles on the print in its theatrical runs because the accents were so hard to work out.

On edit: Maybe it was Mike Leigh, and not Ken Loach. I'll have to see if I can find out which film it was.

The good news is that a 4K restoration of The Lady from Shanghai is being released as a Turner Classic Movies exclusive Blu-ray/DVD combo on January 27, and that it is now up for pre-order on this link...

http://shop.tcm.com/the-lady-from-sh...ollection_sony

The even better news is that I just pre-ordered myself a copy. $29.94, including shipping.

With the TCMGIFT14 coupon, $24.99 shipped here!

Do you know if the CC sale from their shop also is an international sale?

If not do you think it is feasible to belive that, lets say amazon will pull of something similar for international costumers?

By the way, do you know when it is happening?

Sorry for all the questions

After coming away very disappointed with Nashville, I gave Altman a second shot today with 3 Women. I found the film far better, mostly because it lines up more clearly with my interests than Nashville (the dreamlike atmosphere, the sense of ambiguity, the theme of identity.) From what I gather, this seems to be pretty far removed from the rest of his body of work, which is disappointing.

I like all of my Criterion titles enough to revisit in the future. If I had to rank my Criterions in order of preference, though, then Nashville would be down at the bottom. I gave a four-star User Review to the Blu-ray, because I found quite a few aspects of the story to be interesting, and I also love how the Criterion presentation made a good case for this movie's place in history. It's just not a title that I want to revisit all of the time in the same way that I want to revisit the Melville films or the Hitchcock films.

I'll give 3 Women a chance someday, based on your above comparison. Thanks!

Argh. B&N have now declared my 50% off purchases lost. They would only refund. They would not replace the order. I'm really bummed because the order included the Zatoichi Box Set (along with Tokyo Story, Late Spring and Gate of Hell). It'll cost me considerably more to replace them now.
