yeah and maybe its the language for me as well that matters. japanese and korean can sound really "powerfull" in my opinion... same for english of course or swedish. these do all sound "fine" to me. while french and italian same for spain does sound kinda annoying sometimes in classics (at least for me) and godard it the prime example for what i dont like.. this fast talking with the strange narrative he uses.

i got the same feeling from the "a man escaped" trailer... (i do like french cinema, but the more modern stuff is what i prefer so far)

maybe its just the "french" new wave style that doesnt do it for me. i like the japanese new wave stuff way more or "noir" movies. but i dont get why people do often compare oshima to godard. oshima is way above godard in my opinion in terms for "style" and how the movies are cut. (godard has probably the worst style for editing movies and narrative ive ever experince since i watch movies.....)

yeah i got the MoC bluray as well, and i could simply call it one of the worst "classic" movies i do own from all of my BFI/Criterion/MoC/Kino/AE stuff...
it was acutally a movie i did think about not watching till the end..(and that rarely happens, if it does ever at all )

sometimes its really sad to see Kino doing movies like Sacrifice and nostalghia while i would love to see them from Criterion.

instead criterion is doing stuff like fantastic mr. fox and thief...

.. oh well...

For a big box set like Zatoichi, I'm fine with...in fact I kind of wish I was a samurai movie fan, that box is so beautiful. It's that the IAMMMMW disc holders look so flimsy they'll tear or crease in a gentle breeze that annoys me.

Am I correct in assuming that there is zero chance any of the films from Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Project will be released individually?

Most likely. The BBC set has been out a few years and there's been no word of selling those invidually.

help me pick 3 releases please....i want "important" movies.

Cohen Media:
La Beauté du Diable

Kino:
Nostalghia

Criterion:
La Notte
Autumn Sonata
(this is a must have, i want to own all bergman criterion)

Repulison

i liked solarias and ivans childhood, so i should probably get nostalghia (and the sacrifice) at some point.

but im not sure if the Kino release is good enough to give up a "criterion slot" in my order. and what about La Beauté du Diable
ive never heard of this one before but it does look interessting

should i just go with criterion releases here? (i know its kinda strange to ask that here)
I would personally stick with the CC releases. All are great movies! Would be worth the investment and entertainment!

La Notte is magnificent, and it's my second favorite Criterion release of 2013, behind On the Waterfront.

Antonioni's use of framing and architecture in the film is mesmerizing.

Does anyone know if Criterion offers a clear plastic replacement case for five dollars for Nashville or On the Waterfront or Slacker? I can't get criterion to return my emails.

They have only ever offered the replacement cases for the initial wave of releases that were in the thing cardboard. All of them that are currently available are listed here:

I bought a plastic replacement case a few years back for Bigger than Life because the original got caught in a drawer and was crushed.

It cost me about $5. Not sure if they offer replacements for digipacks.

Which film in the Martin Scorsese World Cinema Project box is a must see? Usually all of the brand new releases at my library are picked over and I usually can't get a hold of a film until it has been out for several months. These, however, don't seem to be getting the patrons of my library too excited.

I'm thinking Housemaid. Should I grab this one if I can?

It's nice, though, because everything from City Lights/Frances Ha (was that 2 months ago?) onward is available at the library in blu.

This is what libraries are for!

I noticed mine has copy of City Lights on blu-ray.

Yes, it's pretty awesome, indeed! It's a 5 minute drive on my lunch break and rarely, if ever, do I search for a film in their database and they don't have it. The only thing that kinda stinks is that because I am not a resident of the town, I can't put a hold on anything. I really want to see Smiles of a Summer Night and Brief Encounter and they have been checked out for weeks. I can just imagine some doofus brought them home and they are just sitting on his/her TV cabinet.. every week when the renewal notification comes, they're just renewing the darn thing. Argh!

Our libraries do not have the budget to buy any blu-rays, unfortunately. And they are getting fewer copies of new books, films, etc. They do have a policy that nothing can be renewed if there is someone on the waiting list for it, though. And rentals cost $1.00 for a week. I rarely borrow DVDs as they can only be returned to the counter during business hours, which makes it a bit inconvenient. I was pleasantly surprised at the selection the last time I browsed, though.

I'm still waiting on the Criterion Blu-ray release of Ghost World. Anyone else think it might be released this year?

My library balances that out by denying a renewal if anyone has a request on the item.

Actually, I should probably email them to suggest this idea to them.
Keep in mind that the titles they offer replacement plastic cases for are all 1-disc releases.
