A bit of overlap between the DVD collections between the two exists but so far the Blu selections are quite different. Overall I have been happy with the selections coming to blu from both companies but, despite having a smaller output, I vastly prefer the tone and direction from the MoC side of the HD world. I just received my MoC M on blu and I think it looks great from a packaging standpoint and fits the feel of the film way more the newly released Criterion M. They have also released a few more contemporary films, like Mad Detective and Tokyo Sonata, that (be it for licensing or business/sale reasons) Crtierion would never touch and it is easily in my top twenty films of all time (full disclosure I'm a big Kiyoshi Kurosawa fan).

They just announced a June release for the Profound Desires of the Gods which is another out of left field title that I'm very happy is receiving the HD treatment, that again, for whatever reasons I couldn't see Criterion touching on Blu at this stage in the game.

Black Orpheus is a beautiful movie that always reminded me of another upcoming release, The Red Shoes. Crumb is one of those Paris, Texas type movies that has a great story that I unfortunately never got into. 2 nice additions to the BD family, although I feel more are coming. Hopefully one is the Pialat, which is a very similar story to the 400 Blows.

Sorry if this is a Criterion noob question, but what's the deal with Rushmore? The DVD has been OOP for some time now... does that mean a BR release in the near future is unlikely? Is there some kind of rights issue?

Because August releases were posted, scroll back a page or two.

"Rushmore" can still easily be gotten from Criterion's site right here. It's still very much in-print according to them.

Oh... silly me for thinking that Amazon OOS = OOP?
So I guess its BR release will come in due time then... I'm hoping sooner than later because I've worn my Criterion DVD out, and it doesn't play any longer.

(Random aside, Rushmore was the only film I brought with me when I went to Singapore/China for three months.)

Ok... I am seriously considering to buy the Seven Samurai DVD on ebay for $20 or a little cheaper if I wait a few days.
I have been waiting years to see this, and I can't find a Blockbuster that actually carries it. Except for one, but it's an hour away from where I live....
Ugh... I really want to see Seven Samurai...... This sucks. I heard it's one of the best films ever made.

Are you not old enough to start a 30-day free trial from Netflix and rent it through them? I'm sure there are more convenient ways to see it than Blockbuster or paying for it. Libraries in your area? Universities or colleges? Do you have cable and TCM (Turner Classic Movies)?

I was actually hoping Criterion released Seven Samurai and Thin Red Line in August. I need a month not to buy something, and that would of been perfect to save money. Now with these silents and Pialat, it's been March, April, May, June, July, and now August that is loaded. Dang you Criterion for not putting out re-releases. Dang you!!!!!!

I have never seen it on TV nor seen it on the schedule. I usually rent movies at Blockbuster, but not as much lately. I have never used Netflix before, and I am now aware of the Free Trial. Thanks. I will use that.
The only library I use, is the one in my high school.
I just turned 17/Junior in High School.

Well, TCM has shown "Seven Samurai" quite a few times. All of their movies are unedited without commercials and in the original aspect ratio. Heck, there was just recently a whole 24-hour marathon of Kurosawa films on TCM back in March for the celebration of his 100th birthday. You can go to TCM's website and look at their upcoming schedule of films, by the way.

Oh, to be 17 again. You have so much to learn, young whipper-snapper.

Ha ha yes. Thanks for the information. I usually just watch TCM during Oscar season, hence why I don't realize it's on television.
I am going to rent it from the free trial from Netflix. Thanks.

Nope. I didn't sneak in. Ok, it feels like I just turned 17, but I turned it in January. Time moves so fast!

I just bought "M" yesterday on Blu-Ray. I am hoping it's going to be as awesome as I am hoping it to be. My expectations are very high for this film as it has been called by many people and film critics as one of the "best films of all time."
I am going to watch it tonight. Wish me luck!

If only Criterion would release more Goddard titles on Blu! Because he certainly isn't every bit as entry level to film appreciation as Kurosawa....

You have gotten a bit out of hand lately especially considering the hypocrisy of your elitist comments in light of your handle.

Just so I am clear, numerous "film buffs" find Goddard to be as cliche and sophomoric as you find Kurosawa.

1st, I shouldn't take you serious because you can't even spell his name right.

2nd, I didn't say anything about Godard.

3rd, I was making a joke.

4th, You don't even know what elitist is, so go back to your Transformers.

5th, You can't even spell Godard right, so why should I take your bashing serious?

6th, Get off my manhood and enjoy the releases instead of crying over ones that wasn't announced.

7th, Godard is full of himself. But so is his fans.
