I'm planning to sell the DVD this week, so that I can get some of that cash back from this Blu-ray purchase.

I'm going to keep my StudioCanal Blu-ray of The Third Man for the extras, so that I'll have the best of both worlds with both Blu-rays.
If it wouldn't be too much of a hassle, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the Criterion bluray stacks up to the StudioCanal version (as well as the Criterion DVD [which I own]). I've been tempted to pull the trigger on the StudioCanal version during the current B&N B2G1 sale, but not sure if the difference is great enough.

I bought Last Year ... from Amazon Warehouse in "like new" condition for $26+ shortly after it was announced that it was going OOP. I was very upset when it got to me because the case was very beat up. But under the circumstances of being OOP and hard to find, I kept it. (I did write to Amazon about the poor condition and they refunded some money to me ... I forget how much). I was lucky to get a replacement case from Criterion before they sold out of them. So it all ended okay.

would be nice to see some rereleases of OOP movies like third man and marienbad etc.. everything thats currently really expensive.

i would be fine with the studiocanal release of third man if it had some eng subs....
i dont get why studiocanal could not include these, since they did that for other languages...

So... When is Criterion going to do a release of SLC Punk? I want to have it before the sequel comes out later this year.

I don't know why they'd acquire the rights for a title if they knew they'd only have it a little while. I love The Third Man but didn't get into Criterion stuff until it was long OOP. But apparently they only had the rights for a small window.

Does anyone have any accurate insight on this? Did Criterion get the rights and then run into a snag trying to get the film out? Do they acquire rights for say, 1 year and then the clock starts even if they don't get a restored release out until 6 months later?

There are some great titles that are OOP that I'd love to own but the frugal side of me cries a little at paying nearly $100 or more for a single title.

It's not like Criterion acquired the rights to The Third Man for a short window, and rushed out a release. They'd had the rights to that film since the mid-80s, when they put it out on laserdisc (spine #5). It had remained in print on LD or DVD right up to late 2009 (about 10 months after the Blu-ray was released). They lost the rights after Lionsgate signed a deal with StudioCanal to be the exclusive label in the US for titles owned by StudioCanal.

Penelope Spheeris has said on Facebook that it's getting a release this year, though Criterion wasn't mentioned.

I do not. I only have four and a half Criterions.
-Chasing Amy (which I rewatched last night, my least favorite of the Askewniverse flicks)
-Videodrome
-Eating Raoul
-Repo Man

Life of Brian: Immaculate Edition (has every Criterion feature except 1 doc). I also have the original Blow Out DVD in a Travolta triple feature, as well as MGM's full-screen DVD of Silence of the Lambs (it was $5 at a Stop and Shop).

I may be getting Fear and Loathing or RoboCop (local store has it for $20) on Sunday.

i never saw a B&N from the inside but these dual format releases must save some space on the shelfs as well that can be used for some other stuff.

and finally some people that are still DVD only will be forced to support bluray and will maybe get a bluray player as well.

the line up for next few months makes me already really happy and my wallet wants to cry ;D im gonna a lot of the stuff that will be released in the next 4 months. Persona and the lars von trier movie are 2 of them.
No, no...I'm not against the dual format releases, it's just that we're starting to see stuff that they've previously released on Blu-ray getting re-released as dual formats as if they are "new" releases. I think it's lame that the only "upgrade" we got this month was The 400 Blows...how is that an upgrade? Anyway, I was just venting.

The Pathe release has French and English subs and is region free. Unbeatable!

It was a pretty great disc for its day, but the transfer is non-anamorphic. The features were good, but there was some kind of music rights issue for most, if not all, of the Sex Pistols' music so some other generic plays over any footage of the Pistols playing.
