Wuh?

2001 was a Criterion laserdisc release long ago.

I wanted to make one because I felt it belongs in the collection even though they don't have the rights, and because the current release case is just boring.

A couple of questions.

1) What program did you use for the cover?
2) How long did it take?

Photoshop
4-5 hours. There were certain fonts Criterion uses that I didn't wanna pay $135 for... so I just kept looking for fonts similar.

The guy that did some Criterion custom covers before I liked his stuff, but a lot of the covers were out of proportion or the images he used were skewed or slanted. I like my stuff to be proportionate and maintain the correct aspect ratio lol.

Anyhow, I'll be working on a few more favorite movies of mine:
Citizen Kane, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Delta Force, and Above the Law.

After that, Death Wish 1-5, Lord of the Rings, and whatever else is in my collection that doesn't have a slip or has an ugly cover like Collateral.

I guess Criterion lost the rights, but hopefully a bd is coming from some enity soon.
I was wondering why the trailer was trending under popular trailers on Hulu Plus. It seemed so out of the blue, something had to be up.

Alphaville is my favorite Godard film. I really hope it sees some sort of NA release on blu soon, even if it has to be bare-bones.

Way back in the day Criterion had laserdiscs for 2001, GHOSTBUTERS, CASABLANCA, BLADE RUNNER, CARRIE, PULP FICTION, THE GRADUATE and all kinds of classic films.

Not enough early 20th century police procedural and noir films on Blu.
At last, someone else who likes The Naked City! Also need Dassin's Brute Force on Blu. A police procedure/noir I'd like to see on Criterion is He Walked By Night-Fun stuff: beautiful B&W photography by the great John Alton, partially directed by an uncredited Anthony Mann, the film that inspired Jack Webb's classic Dragnet plus, it features a climactic sewer chase that's fun to compare with the one in The Third Man. All good stuff.

Ha ha, that is awesome. I bought that on DVD right about the time I was heading to college, it resonated with me as well. Pretty much every line of dialogue is great.

Mike: "He goes to Gamblers Anonymous for scratch tickets?"

It's a really nice piece of artwork you made but you spelled Gary Lockwood's name incorrectly on the back. Lol.

Oh, this would be so nice...

I sold a bunch of DVDs last year to build up my Blu-ray collection. Dassin's Brute Force and The Naked City were among those, because I assumed it would only be a matter of time before the Blu-rays materialized. I have regretted this since, because I've been wanting to revisit them for months now.

Finished Army of Shadows.

[Show spoiler]Talk about bleak, full of despair, hopelessness or whatever adjective you want to use to describe it. Well made and engrossing; and most likely very realistic (I don't have a lot of knowledge about the French Resistance outside of film, but I'm assuming the ends each character meet were pretty common during the German Occupation). Overall an excellent film and one I'm glad to say I've now seen.

I just saw The Selfish Giant. It's pretty fantastic. Seems very fitting for a Criterion release, especially with the IFC deal. It would fit well alongside Fish Tank, I think.

I think that we could all use some James Gunn in the Criterion Collection. Super, please!

I am only kind of kidding.

I'm glad that you enjoyed Army of Shadows. It's still my favorite Criterion Blu-ray, although I've been jazzed about The Third Man lately.

I would love to read the true stories that inspired Army of Shadows, since the movie is basically a series of vignettes based on the stories. In a sense, this is one of the most patriotic movies that I've ever seen, because the characters are so willing to put everything on the line just to gain a small inch of ground against the enemy, and every person in the film has a keen awareness that his or her life is a small price to pay for keeping the enemy from gaining ground. At the same time, these characters are only human, and, as such, are terrified of the dangers at stake. The stories of the French Resistance are relatively unrecognized on these shores, so I wish that everyone could see this movie.

Simone Signoret plays one of my favorite female characters ever in Army of Shadows. She has a true rugged strength about her, and she's fascinating to watch. The ambulance scene is incredible.

The secrecy of the Resistance "cells" in Army of Shadows is conveyed so well in the movie. I love the story element of the two brothers who both serve in the Resistance, but each is unaware of the fact that the other is a part of the Resistance.

Good, I don't have to make some lame "Tromeo & Juliet" joke.
(I mean, that's not even good enough for April 1, yeesh.)

Nope. Just with the IFC deal in place, Super would make some sense as a joke. But Criterion loves their Shakespeare, so it would also make sense.

How about a Criterion of Lollilove? Have Tromeo as an extra.

Well most of the movie depictions are basically the same. Small group of French countrymen waiting for a contact to stop by a single farm house at night to deliver a message. Sometimes he makes it, sometimes he doesn't,. When the messenger doesn't make it, normally they find the German's outside. Top Secret seems to be a nice parody for resistance satire in films.

I found the narrative a little scattered at first,
[Show spoiler]I don't recall seeing any reason why Lino was in prison. He goes from prison to the Germans to a suit and tie carrying out a hit on a traitor. But once I hung in there it all came together nicely. I have to admit, based on what happened to the other resistance members, I really expected him to die in the firing range execution scene. I checked the run time and thought, there's about 25 minutes left, are they seriously going to kill him with that much remaining?
