Thanks for the information!

Jules and Jim packaging.
I'll probably wait until a big sale to upgrade my old DVD of Jules and Jim, but I'm also loving this cover art. Well done, Criterion, well done.

I like all of the movies starring Jeanne Moreau. We need Elevator to the Gallows on Blu-ray as soon as possible.

$20 is still a bit steep for a barebones release.

Does anyone know if the film will be available on HULU+?

Thanks for the heads up Hm. It may just be a better investment to rent now and buy later.

ps. This does not happen very often since the sale frequently happens on a release day.
Not going to happen for The Great Beauty then I'll save it for the next sale.

I heard, in an interview recently, that Jules and Jim was a huge influence on Martin Scorsese's famed fast paced, scene-to-scene with the music rolling style that was popularized by Goodfellas, and expanded on in Casino and The Wolf of Wall Street. Does that sound correct? Ever since hearing this, I've wanted to check out the film.

Yes, I have heard this, too. There is a ton of information given in the first 3 minutes of Jules and Jim by a voiceover narrator. I'm pretty sure that this is the 'influential bit' (if you will,) that is being referred to. It would seem to me, however, that this is where the similarities end. I've only seen J & J once though, so maybe someone else out here knows better.

This is a really, really good set.

This Happy Breed was similar in tone and sentiment to In Which We Serve and at least as good if not a little better.

Blithe Spirit was a mixed bag but kind of in a good way. Some of the darker humor didn't mix seemlessly with some of the more romcom farce elements but the whole thing was pretty fun overall. And while Kay Hammond's makeup is every bit as ugly in motion as it is in the screenshots after a while it kinda starts to work. Or at least it stops being distracting.

And the Coward material in the supplements is absolutely fascinating. All of the supplements I've sample so far have been very interesting but I could have listened to hours and hours of Coward anecdotes.

On a bang per buck basis this set is hard to beat.
The Lean Directs Coward box set in hands down my favourite ever Criterion release. It's lovely to see someone talking about it in this thread.

Margaret Rutherford's brilliant in Blithe Spirit.

Inspired by MasturB's 2001 cover, I decided to make a cover for a favorite of mine that I wish was still in the Collection.

They really have to stop with the cardboard packaging. They just look so cheap and fragile. Almost like the old school cheap cardboard DVD cases that always stuck out on a shelf.

One of these days I'm going to get Photoshop and try some of that stuff, your work looks great!

Spoilering the images might be a reasonable compromise. It would certainly make taking no notice a lot easier.

Oh, poopie, that's no fun!
Can't we laugh in your face for being a fanboy and his lil' loyal Photoshop, living in his imagination, and trying to create spring with the power of his mind?

(For years, I kept wondering where I'd gotten that expression, until I happened to catch Baron Munchhausen on streaming. Darn, that was it, the Robin Williams scene.)

As far as these faux criterion covers go. I would rather see custom dvd covers for something like the life aquatic so that they are uniform with the blus. Just a thought

I agree on some of the cardboard packaging...though I actually think editions like Godzilla, Repo Man, and Nashville look great, and quite sturdy. Some of their flimsier cardboard editions, though, do remind me of the old snapcases (which Warner Brothers, in particular, tried to convince us for years were decent DVD packaging).

Thanks! Once I settled on a concept, the rest came pretty easily.

I initially thought about that, but figured that would make it too easy for everyone to scroll right past without noticing...rather than just people who think it's "off-topic" (even while half the topics discussed in here are not even Criterion-related).

I'm not picky one way or another when it comes to packaging, but no way can one compare anything being released now, with those cardboard snap-case DVD covers.
