I'm waiting for Andy Warhol's Frankenstein to be re-released on 3D Blu-ray from Criterion, assuming they still own the rights.

Not a 3D release but Shock is putting out both Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein on blu-ray through their cinema cult label in Australia. These will be out Feb 5th (along with DVD only versions of Flesh, Trash and Heat). Shock has said these will include a number of special features including commentaries.

Good prices too!

I'm curious to know what is meant by this - 'pop-up/top menu' remote trick

My ITV copy of Black Narcissus is region free, but the featurette WAS NOT supposed to work on my non-region free player and it did. ?!?

I don't know if this 'trick' has anything to do with it and I am not expecting miracles, but am kinda wondering if any other region B content will play on my set up.

So, here's my completely unsolicited rankings of the films I've seen of his:

1. Bonjour Tristesse
2. Advise & Consent
3. Where the Sidewalk Ends
4. Laura
5. Daisy Kenyon
6. Anatomy of a Murder
7. Angel Face
8. Bunny Lake is Missing
9. River of No Return
10. The Man With the Golden Arm
11. Whirlpool
12. Skidoo
I just used the 50% off sale at Fox Connect to grab eight of their Fox Film Noir DVDs for $39 ($5 apiece). Otto Preminger's Daisy Kenyon and Whirlpool are in the stack, along with Samuel Fuller's House of Bamboo.

My full haul...

[Show spoiler]House of Bamboo
The Dark Corner
I Wake Up Screaming
House of Strangers
Street With No Name
Whirlpool
Daisy Kenyon
Black Widow

Some of these will probably be announced for Blu-ray upgrades soon, with my luck, but I'm inclined to think that Fox is not in a huge hurry to get these out on Blu-ray.

I received Otto Preminger's Where the Sidewalk Ends in the mail a couple weeks ago, and it's sitting in my stack of film noirs waiting to be watched.

kinda been slow around here.. I hope people don't mind if I pose this question: Rank your top 5 Elia Kazan films. 2 maybe 3 would be obvious.

without explicitly asking about it, I'm curious what the buzz is for one film in particular.

that Fox Connect deal is enticing and they have a ton of Kazan films.

I've only seen the obvious ones and would rank them:
On The Waterfront
East of Eden
A Streetcar Named Desire

I'm somewhere in between. I felt it bore little resemblence to Chandler, but I still liked it. Didn't love it, though.

Whenever I try to google it, I only get 1984. I go to the Criterion website almost every day, but it would be nice to get a good idea of when the 24 hour sale will occur. I hope that I will be able to pick up the Zatoichi set. Thanks in advance for your help!
I think the point of the flash sale is that people don't really know the specific day in advance.

As for the 30th Anniversary, I don't think anyone (other than the folks at Criterion) knows the exact date, or even which month it is. I seem to recall (but can't find any statements anywhere to support it) that their first two (LD) releases, Citizen Kane and King Kong came out at the end of 1984. They were certainly the only titles released that year. Exactly when the company was founded in 1984 is unknown.

My Top Five Elia Kazan Films are...

On the Waterfront
Panic in the Streets
Wild River
East of Eden
A Streetcar Named Desire

Panic in the Streets is a great film noir about police and public health officials on the chase in New Orleans for gangsters infected with the bubonic plague. I saw it for the first time a couple months back, and was hugely impressed.

Boomerang! is available on the Kazan set at FoxConnect, but I am curious to see if it will be released individually, just as Panic in the Streets and Wild River were, because an upcoming MoC release was just announced.

thanks, Owl. thanks, Jay.

Gentleman's Agreement is either about to end it's streaming run on Netflix or just did expire. I had it in my queue, but didn't get around to seeing it.

Anyhow, Wild River was the film that was calling me and for the $7.99 out the door price coupled with The Ghost and Mrs. Muir at the same price, I figured you can't beat that. I'll keep my eye out for Panic in the Streets. I guess that one isn't that high on my list of 'must owns' being that there are other noirs that I feel I need to own and see first.

Speaking of Kazan, can anyone here recommend any mail forwarding services to get the Fox sets shipped to the UK? The current deal is tempting, but FoxConnect sadly don't provide international shipping which is a pain!

They haven't had the rights for years. I do hope they get the rights back however. I love these 2 movies though Blood For Dracula is the one I really love.

Fair enough. It's definitely less straight adaptation (though to be fair, the novel is pretty meandering) than an 'inspired by' sort of thing. That said, I think they hit the Marlowe notes mostly right.

Region Hack for Panasonic BD Players?

Method 1 -

- Insert a disc and wait for the "Wrong Region" screen to appear
- Press the "Pop-Up Menu" button
- Disc should boot to the discs main menu or start playing the movie

Method 2 -

- Insert a disc and wait for the "Wrong Region" screen to appear
- Press Stop
- Press the "Pop-Up Menu" button (You may have to press this a few times)
- Disc should boot to the discs main menu or start playing the movie

Method 3 -

- Insert a disc and wait for the "Wrong Region" screen to appear
- Press Stop
- Press 1 and the number "1" should start blinking in the upper right corner. Press the "OK" button while 1 is blinking. You may have to try this a few times, as it usually doesn't work the first time. Try pressing OK on the first or second blink and it should work.

The potential stumbling block with that featurette wasn't region-coding, it was the format of the material itself. Most US players and tvs choke on 50mhz material. For most in the US 1080i/60 is fine, 1080i/50 is not.

But your player/tv combo can apparently handle 1080i/50 material just fine.

I don't use this workaround so don't hold me to any of this but my understanding is it works on a disc-by-disc basis.
