I just saw that MoC will be releasing Ace in the Hole so hopefully the Criterion upgrade is just around the corner. They will also be releasing Kazan's Boomerang which is an excellent docudrama. Probably too much to ask for since it's a 20th Century Fox film to see in the Collection but the dvd is well worth seeking out if you're not region-free.

BOOMERANG is part of a Kazan set Exclusive you can get at Fox.Connect. I'm not sure, but I would imagine a single disc release will happen at one point. Ace in the Hole was Dec's newsletter clue so it is on its way on Blu ray.

Boomerang! has already been released by Fox on BD. So far, though, it's only available in the Kazan at Fox Volume 1 set.

On edit: Brad1963 beat me to it.

Was very intrigued w/ those 2 sets last week when Fox Connect had their flash sale, but decided against it because I'm only (for the moment, anyway) interested in 2 titles in each set.

Hey, Owl - please do give us a heads up like you did last week if you see that they are doing that sale again! Between now and the next time, I'm sure they'll release some more good stuff. It is a pretty awesome sale.

Will do.

I'm holding out for a stand-alone Blu-ray of Elia Kazan's Boomerang. Other films from the two sets were subsequently released as stand-alone Blu-rays (Panic in the Streets, Wild River, etc.), so I'd like to think that Boomerang will fall in line with those.

Completely off any realm of topic-related, but I purchased the Blu-ray of Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later today during lunch. I saw the movie in the theater back in 2002, I bought the DVD on the day of release, I practically wore out the DVD from watching it so often, I became sick of the movie, and I have not revisited it in several years. Lately, I've had a hankering to return to this movie, because a lot of time has passed since my last viewing, and the increasingly-annoying zombie craze that this movie singlehandedly brought on (although it's not a zombie movie in itself) has run its course. I'll be watching it this evening. The seed was planted in my head a few weeks back when I revisited Michael Mann's Miami Vice and listened to the Mogwai music on the soundtrack.
I wouldn't be surprised to see 28 Days Later show up on Criterion in years to come, but there's not a lot that they can do with the source material.

Any fans of the Visconti film Rocco and His Brothers? I saw this one last week. I did enjoy it, but wasn't overwhelmed by it or anything. I would imagine that it is a candidate for a Criterion release being that The Leopard is in the collection. Despite it's 3 hour run time, I found it to be compulsively watchable. A lot of melodrama, though. Maybe too much.

In keeping with the Italian theme, I was finally able to snag La Notte from the library. I've only seen L'avventura and that was ages ago. Can't wait to see this one.

On a happier note, I've printed out my custom DVD covers, and finally been able to integrate my Criterion DVD editions into my Criterion BD Collection.

Back to Criterion topics:

I saw Man Bites Dog finally, I just don't know about that one. it was interesting but just seemed off. The style was cool, but way too many unanswered questions throughout...
[Show spoiler] so how did the film crew even meet the killer in the first place? Who was this mystery person that started killing the people he knew? And how the hell did he even get caught in the first place lol??

I love that film so much, mainly because of how off it is. The perfect mocumentary. You should check out this MBD inspired Eddie Brock short thats floating around youtube. Ill post it when I find it.

For the love of God let's talk about Criterion movies.....

I saw I Was A Teenage Zombie and thought it was quite good. I've been going through Hulu's collection to find movies I can later buy on blu-ray but I keep finding myself seeing movies that aren't even numbered criterion films.

I would love to see a release of Guess Who's Coming To Dinner (1967) by Criterion someday.

Sidney Poitier and Spencer Tracy are two phenomenal actors.

No please
Performances from Poitier and all the parents were great but man, that movie was frustrating.
Couldn't stand the daughter/actress playing her and also found it to be really annoyingly heavy handed and even hypocritical when they shy away from showing them kiss.
I could live without that one.

Criterion needs to release Hard Eight. Like now. Right now. I want a copy to magically appear in my hands so I can watch PTA's brilliant debut on Criterion.

I can understand what you mean and I respect your opinion.

However, keep in mind that the film was occurring at a time when Civil Rights were becoming an important aspect in the world. It was also very rare to see an interracial relationship at this specific time.

Overall, I think it was a very well-made and well-acted film without the film itself or the characters in the film, for that matter, coming across as biased.

Why thank-ee!
I can definitely agree on the acting. I actually did really like the last 15-20 minutes of the movie and thought that it was a really good note for Spencer Tracey to go out on.
While I understand that it was a dangerous period to even show an interracial relationship it just felt really hoaky. I remember one of the blurbs on TCM saying that younger audiences of that time felt that way even then which I didn't find too surprising.
I dunno, chalk it up to different strokes I guess!
