Maybe the grand scheme is that soon Criterion will again start offering plastic replacement cases w/cover art for a small fee. History repeats itself!

Just a little F.Y.I., the replacement cases were for DigiPacks with the Slipcovers (i.e. The 400 Blows, The Last Year At Marienbad).

I don't think they'll offer replacements for the Slipbox DigiPacks.

Those slipcover cases (The Third Man, Last Year at Marienbad, The 400 Blows, etc.) did not protect from dust. The current slipbox covers protect from dust quite well.

Unrelated, but I watched The Hunt (2012) this past weekend, and am looking forward to see if it wins the Academy Award for Foreign Film. I'm glad that I did not make a blind buy, because it's not a repeat-viewing sort of film, but I am hugely impressed and I am glad that I saw it once.

We're in uncharted waters here and I wouldn't be surprised if they wound up cobbling together some sort of 'BD/DVD Only' conversion kit. They print cover art and slap it around a Scavano case that holds the appropriate number of BDs or DVDs and poof - you go from dual-format digipack to single-format plastic case. They could even throw in a few paper sleeves for the now left-over discs.

If selling replacement cases over the past several years has proven to be more trouble than it's worth I can't see them expanding that just to satisfy don't like this release or that but who knows.

I just saw The Great Beauty and really loved it, still haven't watched The Hunt but will probably see it this week.

Anyway i was thinking there is no way other film could top The Great Beauty at the oscars, do you think The Hunt has a chance? (not sure if you have seen The Great Beauty).

Mikkelsen is fantastic. I didn't think he had that kind of performance in him.

I've been a fan of Mads Mikkelsen since Casino Royale, because I liked the way that he portrayed one of the most multi-layered villains of the Bond franchise. It's good to see him in some even more challenging roles.

I just finished it and I have to say, it's gotta be one of the best B-movie Late, Late show type things I've seen in a good long time.

It's really well executed (go figure, it's Elia Kazan) and unlike a lot of pot-boilers, everybody - from the leads to the bit parts to the 'local flavor one-liners' - is really, really good. Fox did a really nice job with the disc too. If it wasn't so late I'd be dipping into the features now.
I'll pick this up the next time Fox Connect has a 50% off flash sale (or the next time I can snag it for $8 out the door.) I saw Melville's Two Men In Manhattan this past week and really enjoyed it. It's purely an exercise in style; I thought of it in the way you described PITS.. a B-movie noir. I'd like to see more like this - ones that are done well, of course.

Any thoughts on how the two films might be comparable?

Actually, these types of very serious roles have always been his forte. You should see these two films:

I guess you have not seen The Pusher trilogy by Refn.

Part II (2004) is an amazing film in conjunction with the first film. He has been showing his great acting abilities since then. He is also the driving force for the TV series Hannibal. Great series for Thomas Harris fans.

Thanks, Pro-B. I love the guy, but I'm only familiar with his more mainstream work (Casino Royale, Hannibal) and Refn films.

You are welcome, Sammy.

His Scandinavian work is outstanding, and just about all of the Danish films are available overseas on English-friendly DVDs. After the Wedding was Denmark's official Oscar entry. We also have reviews for A Royal Affair, also an official Oscar entry, and again an exceptional film based on a true story:

Lastly, The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas is also coming out on DVD in the UK (there is a Blu-ray release in France, but it is not English-friendly). It is from Chelsea Films, Artificial Eye's sister label. Music Box have the rights in the U.S. Trailer below. Fantastic actor!

P.S. By the way, I am hearing that his new film, a western, is already pre-sold in a number of territories. News coming from Berlin.

You really should watch the Hannibal TV series sometime.

Another terrific movie role of his is in Nicolas Winding Refn's Valhalla Rising. Mads is on screen for almost the entire 90 minutes and doesn't say a single word, but speaks volumes.

On edit: His older brother Lars is nothing to sneeze at, either.

I received a disc only version of Tokyo Story today, all my usual haunts don't have a printed sleeve for the case. Anyone know of a site that has one or has anyone made their own?

Love the shout out to the best Pusher film around, definitely better and more mature than the first one. I dare say that it might be Refn's best film to date even though he only made it because he was broke!

Mads's Tonny in the first Pusher film reminded me of my mate, lol.
