Nope. I was just in the area at the time for a wedding.

One of the very few movies I've given 5 stars on a first watch, what an astounding movie.

Also, I'd recommend Z to anyone who's a fan of The Wire. Obviously nowhere near as dense, but a good blueprint for the type of story the show ends up telling and as close to it as a 2 hour film could be, in terms of multi-character investigations, institutional corruption etc. And like the show, for all its political insight never becomes less than an extremely thrilling ride.

Funny thing is, I really liked the novel Red Dragon back when it came out, but I'm not a fan of the movies. At least Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, and Hannibal. I gave up after that.

What got me watching the TV series was Bryan Fuller. His previous shows -- Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, and Pushing Daisies -- are among my favorites. Like those shows (especially Pushing Daisies), Hannibal has an astonishing production design that makes it beautiful to look at regardless of what's actually happening storywise.

I can certainly understand your reservations as a Harris fan, but since I'm not specifically a fan of Harris or the characters per se, I find a lot to love in the series.

That's too bad. She was wonderful in Curse of the Cat People (my favorite of the Val Lewton batch of films).

Speaking of child actors, I woke up this morning to the news that Shirley Temple passed away late last night.

It's been awhile since I've seen Z (I have it on Criterion LD, but not DVD), and I hadn't thought of it in terms of similarities to The Wire. Food for thought.

That's tempting. Too bad there isn't a way to get free shipping any more, at least not that I know of.

With shipping mine was about $18.50. Still a damn good price.

I never did write a User Review for Ivan's Childhood, since the movie came out during my earlier days on the forum before I developed the OCD tendency to write a long review for almost every purchase. Over the past few months, I've reverted back to writing User Reviews only on rare occasion, because they're quite time-consuming.

I think that Ivan's Childhood is a fantastic film, though. It falls squarely in the middle in terms of the three Tarkovsky films that I've seen, behind Solaris, but above Stalker. The black-and-white cinematography is simply astounding, especially during the night sequences on the riverside while flares are going off in the background. It's a bleak film, but necessarily so.

Rest in peace both to Shirley Temple and to Ann Carter.

I was never a huge Shirley Temple enthusiast, but I did see bits and pieces of her movies during childhood. More than anything, I respect Temple for using her acting career to better her life in a positive way, because that's something that many child actors are not able to achieve.
I love Ann Carter's work in Curse of the Cat People.

I picked up All Is Lost and The Counselor today. Not to seem snobby, but I cannot remember the last time that I picked up a Blu-ray for a newer movie from the new release rack. Probably when To the Wonder and Oblivion came out a long while back.

All Is Lost is my favorite 2013 movie by a considerable margin, while The Counselor is one my top five. I'm looking forward to delving into these later on.

Does anyone sell the DVD's that come with the dual releases? I see the dvd w/no case auctions on eBay typically go for $8-$15.

Cronenburg's Crash (96) was released on Laserdisc by CC. DVD was long OOP, anyone think its a possibility of CC picking it up again.

Probably already suggested, but with Mann in the collection, Manhunter with all 3 cuts would be an awesome addition.

i'm guessing it's been mentioned before, and it's long been an issue, but considering USA retailers often seem to have points at which free shipping kicks in, it hurts that it's $9 basic shipping rate for us international folk. hurts even more because the methods they use are slow and incredibly cheap for them to use in relation to what they're charging for it

$16.99 is fine.
$9 or so shipping is wrong.
total translates to about £16 all in.
for one film.

one.
film.

Thanks for Clare2904's response. I've heard about Ballad of a Soldier. Will def look into further.
Ivan's Childhood is one of my top "surprises" from the CC. I had no idea that I would enjoy it as much as I did. On my running list of Criterion films I have seen since perusing this web site, I have got it ranked as my 11th favorite out of 40 films.

This isn't 'much' of a review, but here's what I wrote for another web site:
[Show spoiler]WW2 Story Told From Soviet POV
Beautifully filmed story of a Soviet boy who would rather go on reconnaissance missions than escape the war by going away to school. Considering all of the film's visual poetry, it should be noted that the film is never anything less than accessible. Ivan's Childhood is a tense and fascinating portrait of the horrors of World War II. Highly recommended!

same here, Owl. I remember you mentioning the fact that your collection statistics show a large number of films from the 1950's. Around 25% of my collection is now from the 1940's, although I think that is a result of that decade being the one in which I had the most catching up to do.

Rififi will also work with the coupon code which is for 15% off. That'll make Rififi $19.41. Find something else you want to get you above $25 and you're in business!
