Maybe Amazon is making up for the month just recently when it took them over three weeks to post the pre-orders.

I wonder if we'll see one more added. It seems weird for there to be more upgrades than new additions.

What what say what? Announcements?

Overlord is an awesome Criterion title that I've seen by way of the old DVD release. The movie tells the story of a young soldier's experiences leading to D-Day by mixing actual WWII footage with a fictional backdrop. This movie will look wonderful on Blu-ray, and it will be a perfect double feature with Ivan's Childhood.

Ace in the Hole and Red River will be day one purchases for me as well.

Great month!

I'll let The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou pass me by. I'm glad that Criterion is finally putting it out there, though, to quell the masses. It's like one of those movies that I want to be released in theaters as soon as possible just so I will not have to sit through the trailers anymore after that.

Really wish they would upgrade My Own Private Idaho already! I'm beginning to think it may never happen.

In all seriousness, really excited to be getting Life Aquatic and Ace In The Hole!

In for a few of them hopefully. Red River, Life Aquatic, Ace in the Hole? Hell yes! Not familiar with the other 2.

I'm stoked for Like Someone in Love. I already have the UK blu, but I'm curious what Criterion does on the special features front. If they've assembled some home grown extra features it might explain why it's taken so much longer to come out here.

Overlord did not get a lot of fanfare when it was restored for a theatrical run and the Criterion DVD release a few years ago. I hope that the Blu-ray changes this.

Overlord has some downright haunting archival D-Day footage. There's this giant metal wheel laced with explosives that was apparently used to clear beach mines. It looks like a terrifying real-life Transformers robot or something. The movie has a lot of otherworldly archival footage scenes like that, and they are juxtaposed with poetically beautiful moments.

I'm in for Ace in the Hole and Red River. Criterion is great this year. They made "Thief" turn into a whole new movie. We just need "Le Samourai" next. But if the French blu-ray can't get it right, can anyone?

It might not. It was licensed from New Line before Warner Brothers took complete control of them.

On the plus side, Criterion's license for the film expired a few years ago and the DVD remains in print, so they were able to reach some agreement with WB and maybe that agreement includes Blu-ray rights, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to hit Blu.

The above is true for Short Cuts as well, but the other 3 New Line titles (Hoop Dreams, An Angel at My Table and Naked) are now completely with Criterion as New Line's rights expired.

That's one worth cheering for, though. For someone with such a large body of work, his early films are scarcely represented on blu-ray. 2 from the 80s, 1 from the 70s (a less than stellar work, at that), and one from the early 90s. Not to mention that Criterion really should beef up their selection of Canadian films. It's embarrassingly small.
