Overlord has some downright haunting archival D-Day footage. There's this giant metal wheel laced with explosives that was apparently used to clear beach mines. It looks like a terrifying real-life Transformers robot or something. The movie has a lot of otherworldly archival footage scenes like that, and they are juxtaposed with poetically beautiful moments.
Haven't seen Overlord but am really looking forward to it. I have heard the movie is very good; haunting is a good word to describe it. I have read several books on the Normandy landings. Rommel had planned to sow the beaches and intertidal zone from Calais to the Cotentin Peninsula with millions of anti-personnel and anti-tank mines. Due to lack of time and labor resources, he did not reach the incredible numbers he wanted, but the volume planted was truly frightening and a major obstacle that needed to be overcome by the Allies. In addition to the wheel device you mention, among the innovations used on D-Day were flail tanks, essentially tanks modified with a rotating drum of loose chains attached to the front of them. As the tank moved forward, the chains lashed out many yards ahead like a massive cat-o-nine (well, more than nine) tails flailing the beach and detonating mines.

Seems like Criterion is trying to make this year a real crowd pleaser.

Such excellent titles so far.

I knew it!!! I contemplated getting this during the last B&N sale, but I didn't end up getting it since I wasn't sure if he'd done the artwork for it. I totally knew it though as I find his stuff is easily to recognize. I'm totally getting this now.

And Art Director as in for the film? Because I know that sometimes that term applies to the person in charge of the overall design of the package.

This comparison would be more apt if Criterion had released any of David Lynch's movies as opposed to every single one of Wes Anderson's. (Moonrise Kingdom "upgrade", here we come!)

Now I can finally move on to complaining about other movies that need a criterion release... Sword of doom upgrade! I want them to get the Lone Wolf and Cub license, This Boy's Life, and I would love to see them get the rites to Munich if that could ever happen... Also hopefully the new Von Trier film Nymphomaniac will see a CC release. Oh, and Dogville would be great...

YES, full uncut version too! Glad they are releasing breaking the waves, but still need Epidemic, idiots and dancer in the dark.

Dogville would be amazing on CC too.

Not to mention that Criterion really should beef up their selection of Canadian films. It's embarrassingly small.
A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, A Dangerous Method, and Cosmopolis are all on Blu-ray.

It's sad how happy it makes me that Life Acquatic is coming. Criterion are really ruining me financially this year. So many crowd pleasers.

I'm stoked that they have obviously listened to advice and complains about the overwhelming amount of art films and lack of "regular" films and have really started mixing quality art and mainstream cinema to please everyone and all tastes. I love art-house cinema but I think we all agree that criterion have the rights/can get the rights to many excellent "fun" movies that deserve attention as well.

One of the only studios I will happily go broke supporting lol

Life Aquatic I'm happy about. Ace in the Hole and Like Some in Love looks cool.

My bank will hate me.

And apparently only one Digipak (Ace in the Hole)!

Oh, and Red River with 4 discs.

To be honest the ones complaining about the people wanting Life Aquatic on blu were far more annoying.

Someone would post one post about it and you'd have three or four pages of people complaining about that post and dissing Wes Anderson.

If this list is true I, for one, am very glad this title is coming to blu. Based on what the a and p quality could and should be, it will be an outstanding upgrade.

All titles are listed on Amazon.

Overlord - seems interesting so I'll probably give it a blind buy.
Life Aquatic - Not a fan of Wes Anderson so I can skip that one.
Red River - already have the MoC edition, not really into the film to warrant a double dip.
Ace in the Hole - I'll be getting the MoC edition.
Like Someone in Love - Already have the New Wave Films blu. I may double dip on this, depending on what Criterion do with it.
