Interesting. Three upgrades, and only two new (to Criterion) titles.

Great idea to email Scanavo. I hope that Criterion at least starts offering for sale replacement artwork and plastic cases for these releases.

I made note of this as well, which leads me to believe that maybe there will be one more title announced. Seems strange to have the upgrades outnumber the new titles, but maybe one or two of the upgrades are complete overhauls in the supplements department too.

I've got 48 individual Criterion Titles currently, it's a 50/50 split on foreign/English language. With the amount both companies release each month, bickering over language alone seems... ridiculous.
You really are reading something into the original comment. They weren't complaining that there weren't a lot of foreign films in the announcements, nor were they saying anything that suggested that they were "turning their noses up" at English films. They were observing that it was extremely odd that Criterion has (apparently) five films coming out in May, and only one of them is a foreign-language film, and that MoC's slate was similarly bereft of foreign-language titles.

For me, I actually could withstand the glacial pacing of the film and it didn't seem too boring...but oh my, was it depressing as ever. 500 times more depressing than the most depressing Lars Von Trier film. 5000 times more depressing than every funeral ever held in the history of mankind. 50000 times more depressing than every conversation ever spoken regarding death and the end of the world. Oh yes, The Turin Horse is quite a movie, devoid of anything redeeming and without a soul whatsoever.

But I...... liked it.
Glad to hear it.

Can you expand on that? I agree that this film could be lumped into a category of "nihilism" but can we honestly say it is devoid of anything redeeming and has no "soul"? That is way off base in my opinion and is kind of insulting to such a great piece of work. I think this film has an extraordinary amount of depth, but the way it presents itself is so "unusual" to us modern moviegoers that it is easy to miss and label the whole thing as "an exercise in (insert whatever you want here)". I know you didn't go that far, and I understand completely your opinion, but if you want to discuss further I'm interested.

For anyone who likes this film but hasnt checked out the blu ray, it is an incredible transfer and I can't recommend it enough.

a lot of people here saying that they like the design for the Foreign Correspondent Blu-ray disc.. I think it's pretty bad. On the other hand, many hated the 3 Films By Roberto Rosselini packaging and I really liked that one!

I emailed Jon Mulvaney at Criterion this evening (and I made sure to mention that Scanavo already has 3 & 4 disc plastic cases).

I'm sticking to my opinion... I firmly believe this film, as the masterpiece that it is, has absolutely no redemption or is redeeming in any way! It is the only masterpiece I've ever seen that is completely hopeless, completely meaningless and completely devoid of anything joyous. You've seen the film, right? How many times have you watched it? Perhaps I need to see this again a few more times. I don't think it is insulting at all to call an amazing movie like this "soulless". It is completely appropriate because it is honestly as humanly vacant as ever.

I think The Turin Horse is absolutely unique and the transfer is completely stellar. The cinematography is otherworldly at times. The sound is completely immersive. And the story is completely without hope, without joy and without positivity. This does not mean the film is bad! If it was meant to be this way, it accomplishes its mission superbly! It is a film that is meant to be seen in such a way, in a way that movies dare never go, and in a way that is so bleak and dark, that it is nearly transcendental. It is a meditative experience in all facets!

Congratulations on your thoughts on this film as well, sir.

Unfortunately it seems like the booklets are way too big for blu-ray case as well. I doubt they will reprint the booklets.

Does Scanavo have cases that hold 4 discs in the Criterion style, though? I don't believe that they currently do. Even if they did I can't imagine them being designed as well with regards to holding the often large booklets Criterion makes. I think that has something to do with this switch to Digipack style packaging on 3 or more disc releases.

I emailed Criterion this past week about packaging of Foreign Correspondent. The reply was they have no current plans to change packaging.

I don't blame them.

I know some people love the digipacks and others do not. Criterion is not going to make everyone happy. The only time they had EVERYBODY hating the packaging was the initial blu-ray cardboard.
