Yeah, I totally went there.

To their credit, Criterion never released Blu-rays in eco-paks like Twilight Time did with their last batch (Thankfully, they corrected this issue.).
MifuneFan has started a thread concerning the criterion digipaks.

Vote and voice your opinion.

I am not surprised what format is in the lead.

I voted and posted in that thread earlier today. I voted in favor of the plastic cases, although I won't throw any Veruca Salt tantrums if Criterion opts to continue with their cardboard digipaks. This Jules and Jim digipak sitting in front of me right now is awesomely cool in so many ways.

Criterion should have never released Rosemary's Baby.

This situation is it's consequence.

"The Criterion Collection is a continuing series of Ruth Gordon films on home video."

I hope Where's Poppa? is next.

It's just frustrating to get these releases in bubble mailers and have them basically destroyed during shipping.
I feel any company--not just Criterion--should realize this reality and stick with plastic cases for all releases; plain and simple.
just my 2 cents worth.
(btw: the Criterion plastic cases for the dual releases seem to have inherent design flaws that lead to the booklets getting severely gutted in the middle. There's simply no way to avoid it from looking at my City Lights blu-ray. Where the case closes there are tiny plastic "daggers" that cut right into the booklet. It seems clear that proper testing of all elements in place was not done before these releases were approved, and that's a real shame.
somebody clearly dropped the ball imo.)
I know people wish other people wouldn't talk about packaging so much, but these issues make it an unavoidable subject. These bds are simply too costly to not be packaged competently, and imo Criterion should drop ALL cardboard packaging PERMANENTLY.
#knowitsnotgoingtohappen

.
All of what you wrote is music to my ears... we know its not going to happen in terms of dropping digipacks, but perhaps if someone creates a petition and gets a few thousand signatures to send to Criterion to drop the digipacks, miracles can still happen.

I finally received Thief in the mail and had the pleasure to view it for the first time. Mann's shooting of the last heist was so strong the sparks/fire coming off the vault looked 3d. The usage of Chicago and Tangerine Dream werent too shabby either. I felt like in other Mann films the characters werent very likable or relatable and the romance felt stilted and bewildering like in his other scripts but none of that matters. Mann is all style and thats fine by me.

Now that PJ is done with The Hobbit trilogy, how about this movie on the Criterion collection in it's international Director's Cut with stuff the US has never saw before.

It can have a quality transfer restoration that can deliver even with a light layer of grain and void of noise and extras galore like audio commentary, documentary, trailers (US/UK/New Zealand/Japanese), poster and still gallery, interviews, behind the gore footage etc.

Is it official that the Flash Sale is starting soon, or is it just rumors?

Well, if it does happen (and I have the money for it), my current top priority titles are:
Throne of Blood
The Devil's Backbone
Lord of the Flies
The Seventh Seal
Weekend
Fantastic Mr. Fox

Its been heavily implied. Criterion has done two flash sales a year in February and September for the past two years now and when someone asked Criterion on their facebook page if it was going to be on Friday they replied "Not friday..."
So it should be sometime this month.

Last year's February Flash Sale was on Tuesday the 26th. Next Tuesday is the 25th.

Can anyone recall what time the Flash sale usually starts?

Due to my late work schedule, I am usually asleep when the Flash sales begins. By the time I wake up all of the titles I want are out of stock. Wish the sale would start at midnight PST.

Trying to decide if I should stay up extra late (or early) to take advantage of the sale when it starts. Just not sure what time that typically has been.

Where I live it starts at 7am for the Feb sale and 6am for the Sept one. I'm either asleep or groggy when they start and, like you, the newer titles are all gone when I finally realize this is the day!

I adore the digipaks, I think they look more expensive and really shows off the artwork especially when you can have panaromic style artwork!

The dual format seems a lot better than previous cardboard cases as I've not had any dodgy ones shipped to me from America, whereas older bluray ones tended to get the dents.

But if I get any damaged I get a refund, it's only fair as I'm buying a brand new item.

Also why complain about bulk and taking ups space! Criterion releases are to show off and look amazing on shelf :-)

I've had more plastic cases damaged in post though, chipped, or razor cuts from customs.

But can understand from everyone's point of view that they are more work to open than the clear cases and yes bugs me they are slightly taller and deeper than the clear cases but meh, they are stunning!
