Someone over at Criterion sure likes cardboard digipacks, not giving up on them, even after all these years. They eventually offered plastic cases as replacements for those first few cardboard digipack releases, including Bottle Rocket. Would be painfully funny if we went through all that again.

Are all the new runs of Bottle Rocket in the Scanavo cases or are they still coming in Digipacks?

That title is currently sold in stores in Scanavo cases. They even still say "First Printing". I don't think I've seen this title in the original DigiPack packaging in years. Before it went OOP, Chungking Express was also being sold in Scanavo cases, though it said "Second Printing". All of the others of that original set of nine DigiPack titles I've only ever seen in the DigiPacks.

I spent a long time trying to trade off my digipak for a standard case. I finally traded it to a video store. Does anyone else have the replacement case? The one I received in return, the art is slightly shorter than most Criterion artwork.

I asked at CriterionForum and got no answer: Was there some indication Pepe Le Moko was going to be upgraded soon? I feel as if I remember reading that maybe Masters of Cinema was prepping a release off a recent restoration, suggesting at least there was a new HD transfer.

Well some people actually prefer digipacks, myself included. For a company that prides itself on the ultimate package idea, I just think a digipack (the thick kind, not the ones from the first run of blu-ray releases) would represent a more unique package. I would much prefer every single release from them be in digipack form, like books lined up on a shelf. Plastic cases with a slip of paper representing artwork for me doesn't represent the effort put into each release.

Of course people will come on here and reply by saying they damage easy, etc, but in my experience ordering directing from the company's website (and not basing my opinion on what B&N sends the films in, which is the consumer's own fault in ordering from that company), I have had NO damaged digipack releases, yet numerous plastic cases either cracked, cut on the spine, or the paper artwork destroyed in some way. In my opinion, I very much dislike the fact that some people have took it upon themselves to speak for everyone in trying to contact them to have them switch over fully to plastic cases. I don't care how much one release is an inch taller then the next on someone's shelf. I actually saw someone type that they will not buy a film if it comes in a digipack release, because they would rather buy films based on what they are cased in and ignore films that are not cased in the boring plastic case. Reading that tells me how much one should value the opinion of the pro-'plastic cases only' crowd.

The poll on this website shows the vast majority prefer the "boring" plastic cases. I'm sorry if you think emailing a company to voice displeasure is somehow wrong but I think most would agree it's not.

I said I'd most likely skip any future releases in those cheap and ineffective packages because that's my choice. Don't like it? Tough, doesn't impact your life at all. I pay a premium for a CC release and that means a solid package that both protects and displays the release and some of the current Digipack releases definitely don't allow that. Also the fact that you claim you've never had a Digipack damaged in transit but have had TONS of problems with plastic seems far fetched at best, almost as if you're throwing something out there just to prove a point but I don't really see it happening. Solid Plastic is more damage resistant than soft cardboard. But hey, if the case comes with broken plastic guess what, you can always buy replacement cases... can't do that with a Digipack.

I don't care how one feels about it, so yeah it doesn't impact my life at all (anymore than these releases impact yours). What does though is people protesting to change something I like. We both buy the same product from the same company, I'm on one side, your on the other. Point is, I like the thing your trying to change by 'voicing your displeasure'.

Look how I can change your words to fit my viewpoint: Well if you don't like the digipack releases, Tough! I pay a premium for a CC releases too (actually never spend money at the B&N sales and actually pre-order everything I want from their site), and I want a solid digipack package that is unique.

I said directly from the company's website, no. Barnes and Noble, I have. But that is due to shipping in crappy packaging.

Also you can get replacements with digipacks, as I have had a free replacement sent to me from Criterion for an order from Barnes and Noble. Free, and I didn't even order it from them. So 2 things you implied are true actually isn't.

So you think it's OK to say keep it just because you like it but not for anyone else to ask that they change it because they don't?

Got it. Makes perfect logical sense.

I'm not crying to Criterion to change plastic cases. I like digipacks and have been silent to them on which I prefer. There is a difference between me keeping silent about my displeasure to them and what you did. Why can't smilies be removed from the internet, they just make people believe one's argument is better than it is.

YOU CAN ALSO GET REPLACEMENTS FROM CRITERION ON ANY AND ALL DAMAGED DIGIPACKS! There I did another internet argument 'winner', all caps. And it's actually true. So the only actual argument against digipacks is the OCD nature of having everything the same.

We can always take some time and give feedback to criterion stating how much we like the digipacks to prevent them thinking that everybody hates them.

OCD, or the fact that they're flimsy, damage easily and don't hold up as well as a plastic case. Sure.

I also checked the Criterion site again, no options that I saw for Digipack replacements. If they want $5 for a plastic case am I to expect that they'll just give them out for free? If so I've got several Digipacks that arrived damaged that could use replacements.

I honestly don't think it matters what the feedback says, they're going to do whatever they want to do. If they were going to listen to feedback, they'd probably stop making DVD releases and we'd never have to have the Digipack discussion since there'd be no need for more than a 1 (or maybe 2) disc release.

Come on man! You e-mail them, like you do when you want to try to get rid of something other people like. You know how to do it.

We could, but I'm just trying to directly go to the source of the argument and say, hey, some people prefer them. If somehow, someone gets them to change something I prefer, well good for them.

Well ya know, we get older (insert cool smilies here if ya want to imagine one). I don't really see the problem I presented in taking a page out of this truly wonderful thread to discuss this issue I have in loving digipacks over plastic cases and to show not everyone is behind running to the company to put an end to it. I say something I don't like from Criterion, the outrage begins. I say something positive about Criterion in actually siding with them, the outrage begins. Reputation man.
