I hear ya. I'd much rather be discussing the merits of often-ignored releases like Close-up or Secret of the Grain but cases are a hot topic these days.

Problem with digi and cardboard releases is they get easy damaged. Not everyone has a b&n around the corner.

And criterion does not ship outside of the u.s and ca.

I asume most international customers use b&n and amazon to get criterion releases. And i had already some cases where amazon did not care for minor damages.

And sending something back to b&n and waiting for the replacement can take some time.

Well, it's written. It seemed like some comments was from the other side with the whole "Tough" stuff as well and the fact that everything he put down about digipacks I had an answer for (well besides the OCD thing).

Let's just tell it like it is, most don't like digipacks because they don't match the size of the plastic cases. Damaged ones can easily be replaced by e-mailing Criterion and they will send out a new, sometimes not even put together yet, version of the digi package. For free. Anytime.

Again, here is how I say it: I prefer them using digipacks. I don't like (since it is my opinion) that people are trying to get them to stop, even though the problems they have about them can be solved. I'm not complaining to Criterion to change something, I'm voicing my displeasure about someone's e-mails of displeasure over something I like, on a forum to do such things.

Close-up is one of my favorite releases from them. It's got fans, hidden, but there.

It's a U.S. dvd company that releases R1 dvds/blu-rays for the R1 market. I can't help ya there, but one is taking a chance anyways on importing them. I'm not going to send hate mail to a MoC for example if they released something in a case I disliked and gets damaged on it's way overseas. They would most likely give me a replacement, and that is where your anger should be with Criterion. What should be fixed is Criterion being able to ship replacement cases overseas.

Something that bugs me about the previous poster's comments though. He said he won't buy digipack releases. But I do. Yet he is trying to get rid of them. I spend money on them, he doesn't. Anybody see what I'm getting at?

Also not if they never respond to emails. The last 2 or 3 I sent them weren't returned. Even general questions about their releases aren't returned.

I don't expect a response from the "Suggest a title" email address, but if I send one over asking for clarification on the specs for a release, a reply would be nice.

Thankfully the people in this thread are pretty good about answering the questions that go unanswered from the CC team.

Those are plastic case replacements, and only a few titles. He was saying you could easily get replacement Digipacks from Criterion.

My copy of Foreign Correspondent arrived safe and sound. I dont mind digipacks if they arrive safe - I care more for the image quality, overall presentation than packaging. All I do is line up the digipacks next to each other and the cases next to each other.
Never did I think Godzilla would be sandwiched between Foreign Correspondent and Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World !

And as I just mentioned above, yes, it's truly sad that Criterion won't send out replacements outside of NA. BUT, it is a NA company that releases films in the R1 market, so can't really blame them on that. Also as a R1 consumer, I prefer the digipack form. Criterion.com sends me the digipack releases in perfect condition. The warehouse they ship out of slices the spines of plastic cases on half of the stuff I get from them. The digipacks are untouched and delivered in a nice box. B&N ships digipacks in these cheap cardboard envelopes and that is why I have stopped ordering from them.

Free is not a given. I was told once that "next time" it would cost $5 to get a replacement (a box set slipcase).

Here you will find the e-mail address in the link below. You say you have received a damaged release and would like to know if you could get a replacement sent. They respond in a day mostly and say they will send one out to you. You wait about 5 business days tops and then at your door or mailbox you will receive a box or envelope of either the digipack put together or you would have to do it yourself (which I prefer as it is really in mint condition when that arrives). Hope this helps:

Never had that problem, and I have received I believe 4 sent to me at different times, dating back to like 2007 even for the expensive Berlin Alexanderplatz package that was destroyed by B&N. Criterion sent the entire box, with no questions asked, to me for free (the outer box not put together in an envelope and the inside was put in a box, so 2 packages arrived for 1 big replacement for free and I didn't even order that item from them). I would gladly pay $5 if one pays for plastic case replacements too.

They always respond if an item you order from them arrives damaged. I'm sure they get tons of emails asking them tons of different questions...maybe they can't take the time to answer each and every one. But in my experience, if you have a problem with an order (which is a completely different situation), they always address it.

And while I don't have a dog in the plastic/digi race, I will say that I've received several broken plastic cases, and no damaged digipacks. Then again, maybe it's because I usually buy the digipacks in person, so I can make sure they're not damaged. But yeah, Criterion has supplied me with new plastic cases when they've arrived broken. Free of charge. With expedited shipping. I'm sure they do the same for digipacks.

Common sense would suggest that one should email CC Customer Service about the damaged item, no? Do they really need to put up a big flashing neon sign telling you how to do that? When my items arrive damaged, I don't freak out because they don't have a specific link to email them about broken cases...I just email them and tell them that my case arrived broken, and they send me a new one.

They do ship replacement cases to the eu. 5$ for the case and another 5$ for the cover.

Had already to order several plastic cases there.

But they do not ship movies to the eu.

Good to hear other success stories by simply e-mailing Criterion about damaged packages. Also glad to see I'm not the only one getting damaged plastic cases. To even make an OCD argument, you know if you go look at your plastic case releases, the artwork could be damaged on some due to humidity. So, could go both ways on that front (for the OCD "everything needs to be perfect" posters). I really don't see why we can't go hand to hand on this issue. Most, on this forum, likes plastic cases. Some like digipacks. Criterion likes both. Let's live with it. E-mailing them to stop releasing something, I have not done (surprising to some on here I take it with my dislike for releases, which everyone has btw). Some want the digipack releases, others want plastic cases. Let's accept that.

Good to know. I've bought some used Eclipse boxsets used off of eBay that were pretty beat up. Those flimsy slipcovers wear out quick. One even has a cracked case. I am going to email them and see if they can send me replacements for free. Also have a John Cassavetes DVD set and the outer box is somewhat worn as well. Hmm...
