Quick question regarding Netflix, as it is mentioned here often as a means of watching films.

Are all the films they have on offer, that contain sex scenes, cut so badly it ruins the film?

I ask as I watched Malena on Tuesday and every scene that had a slight hint of sexual content was missing. If I watch a film I want to see it all, not what someone else decides.

I'm glad to see there aren't many releases on the coming soon page to have ridiculous comic book or cartoon style covers like Criterion has become fond of using. Once upon a time, I thought Criterion always had the best artwork but more recently it's really been about 50/50. I haven't liked one of the Chaplin covers and I absolute hate both Badlands and Seconds. They don't match the tone of the movies they accompany at all. Maybe that's just me being contrary today.

Hmm, I've never noticed this when watching streaming movies via Netflix. Now I'll have to go back and watch some movies again.

I love the cover of Badlands. Like some of the Chaplin covers (The Seth ones).

But most of all, I like the variety in art styles they use. I'm not going to like all of them, but as a whole, I love the 'complete package.'

I have watched a wide range of films on Netflix, and I have never seen one that is edited for content in any way.

Thanks for the quick replies. I have a 30 day trial so I'll keep an eye out for any other cuts.

Perhaps if there's a North American cut of the film??? I don't know. I know Netflix occasionally adjusts aspect ratios and framings so they look better on mobile devices but the more graphic films I've seen have never been edited.

I hadn't heard that. Thanks. I'll be looking forward to it. Of course, I also have about 20 movies to try to get through before they expire on 3/1, including two Criterion titles: Mafioso and A Woman Is a Woman.

I watched Malèna on Netflix about two months ago, and never noticed any cuts. But I don't recall that there was anything particularly graphic, either. But since you live in Canada, maybe there are some differences in what it's willing to show up there that is different than down here.

I would be extremely happy if Criterion decided to release François Ozon's Swimming Pool (2003).

Starting on 3/1, however, Criterion title The Ice Storm is being added, as well as a small ton of Robert Altman films, including The Long Goodbye and Thieves Like Us amongst others.

Doesn't Criterion usually have a February webstore sale? I'm dying for one right about now.

OK, but it's tiresome. Sure, it's taking up a slot, but seriously, do you like everything that Criterion puts out except Wes Anderson films? If not, how do you know that the slot in question wouldn't have been used for something you dislike just as much? I don't care for Anderson's work much, either (except that coincidentally enough, The Life Aquatic is the one of his films I actually like...) but it doesn't bother me that Criterion wants to release all his films. It's not like they're my own personal home video label who only gets to do films that I like.

Look on the bright side: Criterion is now pretty much caught up with Wes Anderson films. Unless they manage to acquire the rights to Moonrise Kingdom and the forthcoming The Grand Budapest Hotel, they are done. So you don't have to worry anymore.

Interesting, hasn't he digitally tweaked some of his films?

The Hidden Fortress Blu-ray

Terrific new 2K restoration by Criterion

This is also a great film for film students interested in framing/composition to see. Some of the things done by Kurosawa in 1958 with the then-current technology are incredibly bold.
