jayembee,

i just watched Europa Report and I wasn't too impressed. Thanks for the recommendation, but this one was a stinker. It was cool they pulled it off on a low budget and I liked the scientific emphasis and research that went into this, but man, such a predictable ending! It blew!

As is The 49th Parallel which also deserves an upgrade to Blu.

Sorry you didn't like it. The ending was a bit cheesy, but I thought it was the only somewhat sour note in the whole movie. Good, solid casting of not overly-familiar names.

Plus an interesting narrative structure. What at first appears to be a jumping back and forth along the timeline is actually not. Dr. Unger (Embeth Davidtz) is essentially the narrator of the story, and for the most part it's told in the order that Unger came to know about what happened.

Are all the films they have on offer, that contain sex scenes, cut so badly it ruins the film?

I ask as I watched Malena on Tuesday and every scene that had a slight hint of sexual content was missing. If I watch a film I want to see it all, not what someone else decides.
Malena had 2 cuts. 1 being R and the other UR. Netflix runtime is the same as R rated. Currently South Korea BR is the only way to see it uncut aside from oop DVD. Current Miramax DVD is R rated, atleast the ones I've seen.
Netflix often does not have UR cuts of movies if rated is available

Such an amazing film. Saw it for the very first time on Criterion blu and the movie is beyond excellent. The PQ makes this film seem brand new.

Sounds interesting as well and both were made by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. I have to admit I hadn't heard of these two guys before but now that I have I will definitely be looking into them. Just like David Lean and Noel Coward.
I watched Red Shoes not thinking I would really enjoy it, hadn't really heard much about it, except for what I read here... and I tend to trust Criterion. Plus, my wife really wanted to see it. I ended up enjoying the film. It's very well made, and you see all these themes that show up again and again in cinema still today. A great movie to watch!

Thanks for the info. I remember seeing this when it first came out on video. I thought, at the time, that it promised more sexuality than it delivered, kind of like those Italian soft-core movies from the 70's. I guess I must have seen the R-rated cut.

As for Netflix, they do have un-rated movies, but it seems like if an un-rated cut comes out after the rated cut, they don't update their catalog.

Terrific new 2K restoration by Criterion

This is also a great film for film students interested in framing/composition to see. Some of the things done by Kurosawa in 1958 with the then-current technology are incredibly bold.

Looks pretty fantastic. Any packaging pictures?

I don't think it's a question of "availability". If Netflix wants to show a film that, say, Miramax has the North American rights to, they have to show whatever version Miramax gives them.

And in this case I believe Miramax only has the rights to the R rated version.

Awesome news from USPS regarding my weeks old order of Thief from Deep Discount. Even though they claim it shipped on 2/11 they've yet to put the package in the mail. They really are going from bad to worse.

sorry, poor wording on my part. I'm 1/2 way working and 1/2 way on the forum. Sort of like South Park/Family Guy. Its been a year or so since I've watched them on Netflix, but Hulu would show un bleeped and Netflix would not or vice versa. Its how they get their shows/movies.

As for Malena, R cut is 92minutes, International is 109 minutes

Excellent trip to BN today! Foreign Correspondent was on sale 20% off, plus the lady at the counter let me use my 20% off that expired on monday, and then got my 10% member discount as well. Really excited about this one, it was also the only copy that had in store and was in good condition too, no big bend corners and doesn't sound like anything moving around in the packaging. I've really gotten into the style of Hitchcock films lately and planning on setting aside an afternoon this weekend to immerse myself in the release.

The other purchase was just as good discount wise... there was a single blu-ray copy of Blue Jasmine marked at 40% off, the others were all 20% (regular price $35.99). So I grabbed that one as well, and used the Feburary mail 20% and my 10% member. Decent little haul for under $50.

Now for the flash sale, hopefully next week. Thinking I'll pull the trigger on the World Cinema Project release, and a few others like Vampyr, The Samurai Trilogy, The Royal Tenenbaums, Modern Times, Ministry of Fear, Nashville, Armageddon, Safety Last!, King of the Hill and Throne of Blood. Going to be hard to narrow that field down, but need to stay under $200 this time.
