I finished Foreign Correspondent last night. It was the first time I had seen it. I'd have to rank it either #1 or #2 of the CC Hitchcock releases. I finally got around to starting Seven Samurai last night too. Only got about 45 minutes in before I went to sleep but so far so good.

I've only heard good things about both, but really looking forward to Foreign Correspondent.

Well, yeah, because they apparently created the R-rated version by making the cuts.

Plus an interesting narrative structure. What at first appears to be a jumping back and forth along the timeline is actually not. Dr. Unger (Embeth Davidtz) is essentially the narrator of the story, and for the most part it's told in the order that Unger came to know about what happened.
There were 3 things that made me irate while watching Europa Report.

1. The editing
2. The narrator
3. The camera gimmickry

The editing was just nauseating. And this ties in with the camera setup where every shot was obviously from a "surveillance camera" onboard the ship. But it was just so distracting because it was like watching the movie through security footage someone edited together back on Planet Earth (which I couldn't get my head around). Then there was the narrator and it was a bit too much of that going on as well. At times, this film actually reminded me a lot of Gravity, but also at times it was like watching a very long, laidback video game too. The acting was honestly nowhere near realistic as it could have been even though the actors gave it their best shot.
[Show spoiler]I just hate when everyone has to die in the end though.
The one redeeming thing about the film,
[Show spoiler]other than the very last few minutes
, was the great research that went into the science in this film. They obviously consulted with JPL, NASA and a host of other sources and it shows. So for scientists and science teachers, they will definitely love this film.

Foreign Correspondent is such a fun movie, and it's a a beautiful Criterion package. I finished watching it two nights ago, but I've been too occupied with offline stuff over the past couple of days to write a User Review like I normally do for my Criterion purchases. Soon.

For now, I'll just say that I'm floored at the quality of the transfer, and I'm hugely impressed at the elaborate special effects utilized by Hitchcock and company for this 1940 movie.

My Controversial Classics Collection DVD set arrived in the mail today. I'm looking forward to revisiting Bad Day at Black Rock, and then seeing the others that I've always wanted to see for the first time (A Face in the Crowd, Advise and Consent, Fury, etc.).

ive only seen 2 hitchcock movies so far psycho and lifeboat (liked lifeboat more)

i ordered today the UK set with North by Northwest / Dial M for Murder / Strangers on a Train (the 3 warner releases) , im still waiting for another universal "ultimate" release for a better price

so far i like hitchcock movies alot and i ordered Foreign Correspondent from criterion as well. i hope amazon does ship that part of my order soon.

gonna get the other 2 hitchcock criterions in the next B&N sale along with the 2 polanski movies im missing (cul de sac , repulsion) and most likely im gonna grab a copy of tokyo story (replace my bfi release) and late spring

dont have a favorite criterion movie since i dont want rank complety different but all on their own awesome movies.

I'm looking forward to it too! I'm sure most of us are! I'm looking to buy Late Ray Eclipse, Foreign Correspondant, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Jules & Jim, Tess & King Of The Hill. I will probably hold off on Blue Is The Warmest Color, but at $10, I might pick it up to see the film until the full release comes out.

Looking forward to your review Owl, always love what you have to say. And as I've said, I'm very excite dabout this purchase. This style is always right up my alley.

And I actually TiVoed Bad Day at Black Rock when it was on TCM, along with Autumn Sonata, The Great Dictator, and Judgment at Nuremberg. I hope to have a nice long weekend once the Olympics are over where I catch up on all of these. In the meantime, I'll be looking forward to your review!

See.... I was thinking about that as well. And I can always trade or ebay it later when the full release comes out. Just don't know...

you'll be waiting a long time for another Universal release. sure, some of the films could have used better restored transfers, but that isn't likely to happen... and that set came out only a year and a half ago

if you've only seen the two you mentioned, you have a lot of awesome viewing ahead of you... but you really liked Lifeboat more than Psycho? you sure?

I love to hear sales stories like this. Bravo!

I highly recommend World Cinema Project, but shouldn't you wait for Vampyr to transfer to blu? I am sure that with Criterion's horror fan base, it should be coming to blu sometime.

I thought about waiting for Vampyr, but I swaer someone said on here they thought it might be a long shot, and it was still well worth the buy on DVD. And I've been saving my pennies for World Cinema, and i think this will be the time to get it.

Thanks, and yes, there are 2 ladies that work at the local BN that I talk to every time I am in, and they always make sure all my coupons work... even if they have to get creative or sweet talk a manager. I've been very lucky, and they are super nice!

There may be a 'Flash Sale' coming up? How long do they usually last? Just a flash?

Not even Modern Times?? I love that one!

24 hours total, but titles sell out when they run out of stock on hand. Some go quick, others (usually fall back titles) are still available until the end. I love the tracker CC puts on their site though. It shows what's selling (or hot) and what they're running low on.

Last year, I had my order placed within 8 minutes of the sale, I hope to get lucky like that again this year.

Can you put titles in your cart before hand and when the sale goes live, still get the discounts?
