I have a copy too. It's an amazing set actually, the inserts are really nice and the interactivity of it was considered quite groundbreaking at the time (lots of multiple angle stuff).

It's also notable for being one of the few Criterion DVD's to make it across to the UK too, in the sense that it was replicated practically wholesale when whoever distributed it here put it together. I think it even has the Criterion spine number on it!

So I looked up Beastie Boys in the DVD section, which led me to find the weirdest Criterion release Ever.

This is NOT a fake. Look it up for yourself.

The Beastie Boys are awesome though!

Yeah, I know they are! I just watched the (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!) music video and Fight for Your Right (Revisited) back to back.

I have the first pressing of licensed to Ill on CD. My parents got it some 30 years ago. Maybe I'll check it out today.

I owned Licensed to Ill on cassette tape when it first came out during my freshman year of high school. I wore out that tape within a year and had to replace it. I now have the CD.

This isn't an actual review but just some thoughts of mine after I watched this film, The Last Wave, for the first time a couple of nights ago. I think this film is incredibly interesting first off. I actually prefer Peter Weir's films over Nicolas Roeg's, even though the latter director is probably a bit more famous in Australia. But I know there are plenty of other legendary Australian directors too, its just that every time I watch a movie from an Australian director, I always think of Roeg. Okay, so as for the movie itself, Richard Chamberlain was fabulous and so was David Gulpilil. I remember his first role in Roeg's Walkabout, but here he is several years older and his acting is more refined. It was also amazing that Weir and his crew were able to find those tribal Aborigines up north to appear in the movie. The Aboriginal man who played the elderly "Charlie" was otherworldly and haunting as well. I thought the story was really bizarre though. I won't get into any plot details but overall, I felt a sense of fragmentation and disillusion in the movie's themes. And of course there was all that emphasis on water. There were a few shots that were really unforgettable though,
[Show spoiler]especially that shot of the people floating in the water which I thought was truly apocalyptic
. I definitely recommend this film to anyone who is a film buff. Finally, I'd love to see an upgrade of this to Blu-ray too.

I stopped by a used movie store on my way home from a training run this afternoon and bought a perfect condition copy of For All Mankind for $17. Score!

There was also a $17 used copy of In the Realm of the Senses at the store, but I didn't quite have the guts to purchase that one.

Before I watch For All Mankind, though, I'm going to watch The Spectacular Now, since I just rented the Blu-ray from a Redbox down the street.

jw007, thanks for your take on The Last Wave. It's such a beautifully atmospheric film, and I'd buy a Blu-ray in a second. I always associate Richard Chamberlain with his character, a complete tool, in The Towering Inferno, but he had some great roles in some cool films back in the day.

I watched Thief last night. What an amazing transfer. You could tell it was a Mann movie even for being his 1st feature film. Been quite some time since I seen it, Caan was pretty over the top acting wise. Still a solid film.

Then started Samurai II but to tired to finish.

I want to choose 4 out of these:

Beauty and The Beast
Tokyo Drifter
To Be or Not To Be
The Earrings of Madame De...
Solaris
The Lady Vanishes
The Man Who Knew Too Much
The 39 Steps
Foreign Correspondent
( I'd like to limit it to only 1 Hitchcock)
If you like Hitchcock, then you simple can't go wrong with his four Criterions. I have three of them, and Foreign Correspondent is on its way too. They are amazing films and amazing editions also!

ummm I could definitely be wrong but i don't think Roeg is in anyway Australian and Weir is definitely more well known over here. I think 99% of us wouldn't know who Roeg is.

So far, the main contender for a film/release of the year!

You are welcome, iScottie.

And one recommendation: I had a double-bill last night and would like to recommend Gorbaciof, with Toni Servillo. The great Italian actor plays a gambler -- with a large red birthmark on his forehead, hence his nickname Gorbaciof -- whose life spins out of control. Top film! Out now on DVD via Artificial Eye. (No Blu-ray).

Gorbaciof DVD

No way Roeg is better known here in Aus than Peter Weir. I'd hazard a guess Baz Lurhmann would be the closest to a household name of Australian directors, with Weir second (and probably a significant distance between the two), and Roeg I don't think would be remembered. Though Walkabout would be known to a lot.

EDIT: Awesome review, Pro-B. There are 3 cinemas I think in my city that are still showing The Great Beauty, I'll have to check it out in the next week!

Just popped in to notify Criterion fans that The Killers, like a half-dozen other Arrow titles, including The Long Goodbye (another potential Criterion release) plays fine with the pop-up menu trick. If people aren't willing to invest in a region-free player, they should at least be using a Panasonic!

I'd pick up:
Beauty and the Beast
Tokyo Drifter
Solaris
The Lady Vanishes (this comes with a bonus full-length feature film, Crook's Tour, and you can't beat two films for the price of one.)

I wouldn't pick Earrings as it reportedly has a very bad transfer. You can't go wrong with Hitchcock but The Lady Vanishes is my favorite of the bunch. Beauty and the Beast is also a wonderful film. Haven't seen the rest so I can't comment on them.
