I'd recommend creating an account at the Criterion site and configuring your payment options and such in advance to minimize checkout time during the sale itself.

Especially if you're shopping from work, like...uh, not me. No, no, definitely not me.

Ahem.

What do you guys think the first title to go out of stock will be.

I think Foreign Correspondent.

Agreed.. unless it's a box set like Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman or World Cinema.

Fox or Foreign Correspondent seems the likeliest, but I could also see it being Tess, as there is likely a decent number of people who may have picked the other two up during the past week.

I was thinking Blue might go fast, but then thought a lot of people may just wait for the expanded edition later. I do see It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World going quick... not sure about Jules et Jim, seemed like a lot of people weren't as keen on it as I thought would be.

I'd say both Fox and Correspondant have been available for pretty good prices from Amazon for at least a month, so they're not going to move as quickly as some seem to think. Same for Mad World. I'd lean on it being King of the Hill or Tess.

It took 13 days to make it from KY to WV but Thief finally arrived!

Also received The Front from TT today as well to add to my slowly growing Woody Allen BD collection.

The Barnes & Noble down the street just called me to let me know that my copy of Tess is waiting for me to pick up tomorrow when it is released.

Even if there is a flash sale tomorrow, I'd rather buy Tess in person to verify that the digipak is in good condition.

Totally surprised by how much I enjoyed it too. Wasn't remotely interested when it was announced but grabbed it out of growing interest and general praise. Needless to say I didn't regret it.

Assuming the sale is tomorrow (here's hoping), I'm looking to pick up between 5 and 7 titles. Here's what I've got my eye on:

Blu-ray
Naked Lunch
The Magician
Kagemusha
Throne of Blood
Wages of Fear
The Lady Vanishes (Definite)
Bottle Rocket
Rififi (80% Definite)
Sweet Smell of Success

DVD
Stray Dog
The Pornographers

The Lady Vanishes will complete my CC Hitch collection. Bottle Rocket will give me every Anderson (except Mr Fox) and a few Kurosawa's that I don't have in my collection.

With only 1 100% sure fire buy, it leaves a lot of possibilities. Thoughts?

I wouldn't buy DVDs, as there's always a possibility for an upgrade.

That's a fine list, tho I'd agree to hold off the DVDs. BTDT.

Of the BDs, I'd strongly recommend Throne of Blood. Very rewatchable and a top rendering of Mackers. Likewise, Wages of Fear. Intense suspense, even today. My other strong recommendation is Rififi. More suspense, engaging setting.....and there's that way-famous heist scene. I'd put Lady Vanishes in my top five Hitchcock flics, too. And Sweet Smell is a wonderful watch. It flipped more than a few of my expectations of actors and attitude.

If you hafta cut something, I'd chop Bottle Rocket. I'm an unapologetic Wes Anderson fan, especially of his post-Aquatic work, but Bottle Rocket is all quirk and no heft. If it's the only Anderson you're lacking, that might be a reason for picking it up, but keep your expectations low.

I disagree with the above assessment of Bottle Rocket, though I respect their opinion.

In my opinion, The Wages of Fear could be dropped. That may shock some of you but I grabbed it based on rave reviews in here and it's absolutely true that the trucking journey is very suspenseful and well made. However there's the matter of the first 40-60 minutes (can't remember how long) before they leave on the trip which is frankly boring. There are other moments too where the film isn't so hot.

I personally think it gets a little too much praise considering how uneven the movie is. The suspense has help up well, the first act hasn't, though it is well shot.

I'm not saying Bottle Rocket is better but it's consistent and it's true there isn't as much to the story or general production as Anderson's other work but I wouldn't call it all quirk and no heft. Said heft typically doesn't present itself on first viewing of any Anderson film. I have to watch them all at least twice to feel it.

If you wind up enjoying Bottle Rocket, it's really, really re-watchable. All of it. I don't imagine there are many fans of The Wages of Fear who actually love everything before the nitroglycerin truck ride begins.

Bottle Rocket sits at about 5th in my Wes Anderson list but it's a charming picture and I return to it
from time to time.

I'm not saying Wages of Fear isn't worth buying. I'd personally just watch it online first and then decide if you actually think you'll re-watch it.

Also worth mentioning; Bottle Rocket was among Martin Scorsese's favourite films of the 90's.
