It didn't feel like a 3+ hour film did it?

I've spent the day revisiting the 1930's Noir/Hitchcock films from CC. I should have the last one tomorrow (The Lady Vanishes) so today I've watched The Man Who Knew Too Much and The 39 Steps. I threw in The Ministry of Fear for good measure. If I have the time or energy to keep going, I'll try to squeeze in Night Train to Munich as well.

Not at all! It went by so fast.

I would have been fine with it even longer.

Spent my evening with Tess tonight. It's very likely that this is the best of the 100 or so films I've already watched this year and the best discovery I've made through the collection since they dropped the upgrade of Eyes Without a Face in October (though my viewing of 3 Women in early January comes very close to these two). Rosemary's Baby has long been one of my favorite films ever, and I think this bests it in terms of Polanski's body of work, so it seems I've stumbled upon a new film to call an all time favorite. The cinematography is simply jaw dropping, almost Malick good, and Natassja Kinski is infinitely watchable. It was great to finally get around to a film that she headlines, after falling in love with her devastating, yet minor performance in Paris, Texas.

I fully expect this to be one of my favorite Criterion releases of the year (I know it won't be the favorite, as everything hints to Persona taking that title), and, with time, to become one of my favorite films in the entirety of the collection.

That's two for two today between this and The Long Day Closes. I may try to tackle It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World tomorrow. Which version is recommended for a first time viewing? Or I may just watch Thief.

I'd start with the standard version and then the extended viewing later. The reason being is that the extended "road show" version isn't as smooth as the theatrical version; it involves stills and lesser quality footage to fill in some gaps which seems to irritate some purists.

I figured that would be the route to go. Typically, I go for the longer version if it's in the form of a miniseries (Carlos, Fanny & Alexander), but then with something like Apocalypse Now, my go to is the original cut.

I still have Fanny & Alexander in my "This needs watched" pile. I haven't been able to find that kind of time since.. oh last year or so to actually watch the TV version.

My reaction exactly. A little back history though-back in the mid 70s our local PBS station ran Janus films in the afternoon and featured a musical intro that featured clips from various films in the collection. One of these was the iconic "race" sequence from JaJ. For whatever reason, this film kept escaping me from seeing it and, of course, that whetted my appetite even more to see it. I finally cornered it many years later on TCM and had the same underwhelming experience you had. I'm sure my expectations were based on that wonderful sequence I saw nearly every weekday on PBS and were impossible to meet. I need to see it again since I like most of the other films I've seen from Truffaut.

So happy you enjoyed it Scottie, it's an essential classic, and easily one of the greatest films ever made. I bet you're kicking yourself for not seeing it sooner!

I think the concept is really, really cool, but I just found myself not really caring for any of the characters. I mean, after a while, I had to ask myself how they still couldn't possibly figure out Catherine. lol.

I'm glad, that final battle knocked my socks off after the first viewing.

I've seen High And Low, Rashomon, and Seven Samurai.

I still have to see (on BD): The Hidden Fortress, Kagemusha, Ran (need to buy), Sanjuro, Throne Of Blood, and Yojimbo.
