Right now I'm watching the oscars with my family. We printed out ballots, and whoever guesses the most right gets 20 bucks (5 dollars from each person) Right now I'm tied in 2nd place

There's an episode of Fringe in which Walter Bishop destroys a laserdisc player. I thought this was a nice touch.

No surprises so far. Gravity is cleaning up the technical awards.

I predict 12 Years a Slave will win best picture...

Even though Gravity is cleaning all the technical awards.

And I hope best director goes to Cuaron (how could they cut him off when he was just about to talk during the editing award!), but I have a feeling McQueen is going to win it.

I also really loved Her so if that film wins anything, I'd be really happy.

No mention to Gabriel Axel or Alain Resnais, i guess they were not famous enough, not sure if they have Oscar nominated films, although there probably wasn't time to include Resnais.

Axel won an Oscar for Babette's Feast.

Well, the scores are in. My brother won. He gets 15 dollars from the competition, and 14 dollars from our own competition, the lucky bastard.

It's always iffy when a death occurs close to the Oscar ceremony whether a particular person will get mentioned in the necrology reel. They'll probably get mentioned next year.

I have to say I was surprised to see Jim Kelly mentioned; I had no idea that he'd died.

I confess that I'd hoped that Gravity would win in all of its nominated categories, but I can't say I'm surprised that Blanchett beat out Bullock for Best Actress or that 12 Years a Slave beat Gravity for Best Picture.

Still, I'd say Gravity was the big winner of the night, winning 7 of its 10 nominations.

Gravity won big but 12 Years a Slave won the main award that mattered. I was also extremely happy to see Her win for best original screenplay. They totally got that one right. Cate Blanchett totally deserved it for Blue Jasmine and McConaughey surprised me for best actor in Dallas Buyers Club (I really thought DeCaprio might have won that for The Wolf of Wall Street). It seems like American Hustle didn't win anything, nor did Philomena, Nebraska and Captain Phillips.

Well, Criterion friends, it looks like I'm going to purchase The Great Beauty as a blind buy seeing that it won for best foreign film.

La grande bellezza! Can't wait to see it soon!

Was happy for 12 years a Slave winning best picture.

Esquire mag wrote American Hustle was a B rated movie at best ouch.

For Woolf, he lost to Paul Scofield for A Man for All Seasons, and there's absolutely nothing unfathomable about that.

As for Peter O'Toole, he lost to...

Gregory Peck for To Kill a Mockingbird, and rightly so.

Rex Harrison for My Fair Lady -- a toss-up, but not unfathomable.

Cliff Robertson for Charly, and rightly so again.

John Wayne for True Grit -- I would've given it to Dustin Hoffman for Midnight Cowboy

Marlon Brando for The Godfather -- I would've given it to either Caine or Olivier for Sleuth

Robert DeNiro for Raging Bull -- and rightly so.

Ben Kingsley for Gandhi -- and rightly so.

Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland. I can't comment on this as I haven't seen the film O'Toole was nominated for (Venus), nor any of the other nominees' films except Blood Diamond (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Well, we're all entitled to our opinions -- and rightly so.

The liquidity of the film and they way Terence Davies plays with time is totally entrancing. Hopefully people were just holding off on it for the flash sale and a dialogue on the film opens up in the coming weeks.
I was wondering the same, i just watched it today and found it to be very beautiful and touching in an very unconventional way, i can see why Svet mentions Terence Davies is the Britain's answer to Terrence Malick, now i am very interested on Distant Voices, Still Live, which i was unaware was part of a kind of trilogy of his.

The Great Beauty is still playing at a Regal theater right by my work. I have seen close to zero foreign films but the Blu-ray review and now the Oscar win convinced me so I plan to see it this week!

emmanuel lubezki finally got an award! seriously, how did he lose so many times, I mean Hugo beat Tree of Life... how!?

I really am not a fan of the Oscars, they are over rated and often mess up on who they award too, plus you see all the non film buffs crying cause leo hasn't won, yet they ignore people like Lubezki etc lol

This is why I like Cannes etc, they seem to really appreciate every film even if they don't win, and they really celebrate and award those who are deserving.

Hell, look at Lars, he's won big at Canne and so has most his leading ladies (well deserved) yet he will never be appreciated by the masses or at oscars it seems (except for dancer and breaking which were at oscars, yet lost :/)

Also glad to see Her got some recognition as it was superb.
