$10 seems a little high for me, specially since it isn't the director's cut, which i am not sure if will be released anywhere.

I just watched it and I truly hated it. I found the entire thing to be an overly pretentious and unrewarding experience that relies too much on sex and forced connections in order to create an unnaturally flowing story. The entire thing was laughable and a huge downstep from both Antichrist and Melancholia, in my opinion. In fact, I couldn't wait for it to end.

Still, I figured I'd pass the news along.
Happy to hear this. I never liked Trier. He just is becoming more pretentious with each passing film of his. The first time I heard the title "Nymphomaniac", I shuddered and grimaced. I knew it wasn't going to be something I wanted to see. Thanks for reaffirming my assumptions on this film.

Finally got my delivery of La Vie De Boheme from the flash sale...it came nicely wrapped in gold paper with a bow...and a golden ticket! One free bluray or DVD film of my choice...not a shopping spree in the closet, but still awesome!

I saw both parts of Nymphomaniac a couple weeks back when I was in Paris. It is Von Trier's masterpiece. The film's sense of humor is incredible, especially in the first half. Stacy Martin is a revelation.

Sure. You'll never mistake it for The Prestige (still my favorite Nolan film), but it's a solid piece of filmmaking, and you can see the beginnings of his filmcraft in evidence.

I would agree is that GCI (or any SFX) is not a valid substitute for a good story and good characters and good dialogue. I think George Lucas has proven that point with his prequel trilogy.

But on the other hand, I think CGI is as valid a tool for the director to use to present his vision, as any of the other optical effects tools used by directors since Georges Méliès. After all, what makes movies different from prose or paintings, or whatever is that they are motion pictures, and if the tools used help sell the "environment", than all the better. It's not like we didn't have SFX "showcases" before the advent of GCI. Forbidden Planet? 2001: A Space Odyssey? Star Wars?

That's why, with respect to this year's Oscars, while I thought 12 Years a Slave was the most compelling story of all the movies I'd seen last year, I think Gravity was the best movie. I felt like I experienced something that I could not have experienced otherwise.

I watched Night Train to Munich last night for the first time. It was excellent! I didn't realize its almost a companion piece to The Lady Vanishes as there are 2 male actors who reprise their roles in this film (I forget their names). I thought the movie really kicked into high gear in the 2nd half. It was very engaging. Although I didn't think the locations and acting were all that realistic (esp. in the gun fight). I can see how people compare this film to a Hitchcock film now, but I still don't think it looks anything like a Hitchcock film. The comedy and humor is so understated in that British sort of way. It's extremely funny!

If anyone is interested in such a thing, deepdiscount.com appears to be selling single movies from the Cassavetes, Rossellini/Bergman, and Lean/Coward box sets as part of their classic movies sale.
