The AE release is out in a few weeks. Other than that a torrent is the only option but I wouldn't imagine it'd look too good ripped off VOD.

I watched the two volume torrent. It definitely made me wish I could get the blu already. Not pretty but watchable still.

I watched a torrent ...its basically had the PQ of a VHS tape.

Overall, I was disappointed with it, which sucks because I was waiting for this since it was announced. I posted some thoughts in it's movie thread:

[Show spoiler]Structurally, the film is a mess...it rambles and certain parts are very disjointed. The part with Uma Thurman felt so random, and when it jump cuts to her screaming I laughed out loud (not in a good way). The part with Christian Slater in the hospital felt predictable and poorly developed. And the last chapter when Joe becomes a criminal...jeez, that felt like a completely different film.

The dialogue is at times pretentious, ridiculous, or down right laughable. When Stellen Skarsgard randomly talks about Zionism, or when Gainsbourg throws in comments about racial epithets or pedophilia, it felt like the characters stopped existing so Lars could lecture the audience. I think Lars' self-imposed exile from the media after Cannes '11 is really getting to him, as the film is filled with his own lecturing thoughts cut and pasted into the dialogue. Like Dogville, Lars uses the film to take numerous jabs at his audience and critics, and Nymphomaniac suffers those same forced and scripted results as the former. He doesn't let the film breath.

The only chapter of part II that was at all interesting were the S&M segments with K, which were the only scenes that were truly unnerving in parts I or II (the rest of the sex scenes were rather dull). That part was riveting and Jamie Bell was excellent. Lars could have cut that out, added it to part I, scrapped the rest of part II, edited it down to a 3 hour movie, and couldn't have called it a day.

I liked the connections Lars made between sex on the train and fly fishing, or polyphony and three of her best lovers, but even the connections that worked seemed ham-fisted and shoved into the narrative with a crowbar. There is a scene in part II where Gainsbourg mocks Skarsgard's intellectual interruptings, which is Lars poking fun at himself, but it was a little late at that point.

I wouldn't say I hated the film. These are my issues, but the scenes that worked really stuck with me. This is being called his sex epic, but unfortunately it has some of his best work as well as his worst IMO.

The film is very dark image wise, I would try to see it in cinema or buy the blu ray.

Yeah, I was not impressed enough to revisit this when it hits theaters. Maybe when the BD comes.

Dang...just noticed the 15th falls on a weekend AGAIN this month. That means once again we have to wait a few extra days for this month's announcement. (I look forward to these quite a bit...)

I got Nashville and rififi from amazon today from that one day sale. That was the fastest free shipping ever from them I've ever gotten. Do they prioritize those flash sales quicker then normal?! Odd..

Wasn't there a time when CC would just announce them early when in landed on a weekend? Especially with months like this one...one day off.

What do you guys/girls think of Danny Boyle's film The Beach? I just watched it on Cinemax tonight and fell in love with it. I think it's one of Boyle's best films. I can't stop thinking about it.

The only thing I didn't like after 1 viewing was the painfully obvious Antichrist tie in. I got it visually right away but then when he used the same music it took me right out of the film. So out of place in my opinion. Also Shias accent was awful
Yeah I agree, felt same way about that scene, was ok, but I've seen antichrist so many times and its one of my favourite films, so I did cringe a little, it would have worked better if he didn't use the music - but its not that bad after a few viewings, you get used to it :P

I can't stop thinking about how much I wish this movie were available on Blu-ray. It's been years and there still is no Blu-ray of this! It's a totally fantastic movie. If Criterion released it, I'd probably blow up my computer in joy.

Yeah, but on the bright side, there's no Monday holiday this month (unless the folks at Criterion close for St. Patrick's Day) so the announcements won't be bumped to Tuesday.

The HD cable version needed some work too. I kept thinking how amazing it would look on blu-ray. It's unfortunate because it makes me doubt if it will ever get a blu.

I would've thought that most people would be familiar with him from De Palma's The Fury.

He also did a TV series back in 1959-1960 called Johnny Staccato that's a lost gem. It was something of a rip-off of Peter Gunn (private detective who hangs out in a jazz club), but was nevertheless just about as good.

Amazon still has my Zatoichi order listed as "Preparing for shipment", although I ordered it on Thursday. I must have been late to the game in terms of stock availability during the sale or something. There's no hurry, but I'm just hoping that the set arrives in good condition.
