I don't know that I would buy Following or Thief blind. If you like Memento, you'll probably enjoy Following. If you like Manhunter and Miami Vice (the TV show) you will LOVE Thief.
Ah god, Nolans older films are is best work - yeah his newer stuff is well put together but just feels so commercial an impersonal.... Following is a superb film.

Amazon UK has always been faster than Amazon US for me as well. I can count on 5-7 days with UK, and 7-14 for US.

Rashomon is probably considered the most "essential" of the four, but if I had to pick one to personally recommend, it'd be Throne of Blood.

I haven't seen the Kurosawas but Thief is a masterpiece. Didn't like Following at all.

"Carney is highly critical of Hollywood filmmaking, and the way it is approached from an academic standpoint. He is well-known for the stridency with which he attacks directors such as Steven Spielberg, Brian De Palma, the Coen Brothers, Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles and Quentin Tarantino, whom he describes as tricksters, using empty style and pseudo-intellectualism to score points with an "in" crowd. Carney often refers to Spielberg's output after Schindler's List as Steven "Please take me seriously" Spielberg movies. Carney is as critical of the academic establishment that gives plaudits to these directors as he is of the filmmakers themselves.

In his 1989 Alaska Quarterly Review essay on Woody Allen, "Modernism for the Millions,"[4][5] Carney notes that Allen uses humour in his films to defuse situations that he, the filmmaker, is uncomfortable with, such as drug use and depression. At the same time, Allen wants to get credit for bringing up these issues, as that is what serious artists do.

Carney argues that symbolism is a "high school" understanding of art, and that this kind of "decoder ring" approach is in place because it is easier to grasp and makes those that teach feel more important and esoteric. "

Keep it. I'd rather stay ignorant. This guy sounds like a schmuck.
yes, carney is def a controversial figure.. however, the book is titled cassavetes on cassavetes, not carney on cassavetes. he merely edited the book.

By no means am I an "expert", but if i were to choose:

Thief~Great movie in my opinion, may drag at some parts but overall a great film nonetheless.

Throne of Blood~To "me" a true adventure and I enjoyed every second(and it was a blind buy!)

But all 4 are great! So good luck with your choice

Not exactly my place, but if you are close to having no money, spending what you do have on Blu-ray's is probably not the best choice. Just thought I would sound the voice of reason here and let you know it is an option to not spend it right now and wait until you have more disposable funds for movies.

I second this, specially if you are blind buying, you could probably rent them or something to save money, i have seen those 4 titles and for me none is particularly essential.

Great film with an outstanding Bernard Herrmann score, directed (mostly) by Nicholas Ray.
I just finished watching On Dangerous Ground, and I agree enthusiastically with your above recommendation. Robert Ryan was great in The Set-Up, Crossfire, Clash By Night, and Bad Day at Black Rock, but this may be my favorite role of his. Ida Lupino is one of my favorite noir women, although, funnily enough, I first discovered her in The Twilight Zone episode, "The Sixteen-Millimeter Shrine."

The variety of locations in On Dangerous Ground is a brilliant asset, and I loved the rural setting during the pivotal outdoor scenes.

Echo these words. What is the big rush? Sales coming soon from B&N. Why not save a bit and have yourself a nice time during the 40% / 50% sales

I've no money and looked at the DeepDiscount today as it was mentioned. Put 4 films in my cart. Looked at the total and thought "why do I need these films now?" I don't and they can wait until the 50% in July. I am in Canada so nothing less than 50% is worth it for me.

Just my 2c

That's the one where she is the aging movie star who sits in her room alone all day and watched her films from the golden days, right?

Correct!

Ida Lupino was an amazing noir actress, but she also directed one of my favorite noirs, The Hitch-Hiker (1953), which is available on Kino Blu-ray. It's great to see a film noir directed by a female, and this one happens to be one of the most rugged and intense films of the genre.

How do you guys feel about Identification of a Woman?

I watched it today for the first time and I honestly enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. I'm a huge fan of Antonioni's trilogy, but I think IOAW was a pretty solid film for one of his later works.

The music soundtrack for Identification of a Woman for the win.

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), John Foxx, Japan, Tangerine Dream, XTC, etc. I love me some late 1970s/early 1980s synth pop, and this soundtrack excels as such.

I wrote a long User Review for Identification of a Woman a few months back when I saw the Criterion Blu-ray, because I was quite taken with the film.

I love the visuals throughout the movie...
